TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Shannon Rowbury broke her own school record by nearly three seconds as she rolled to a first-place finish in the 1,500-meter race Saturday at the ACC Track & Field Championships on Florida State's Mike Long Track. Rowbury, who won the conference championships in both the one-mile and 3,000-meter races during the indoor season, won the race in 4:14.81, six seconds ahead of her closest competition.
Lauren Matic missed joining Rowbury in the winner's circle by just one-hundredth of second, as she placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.07, trailing Carolina's Erin Donahue who came in at 2:09.06. Matic's mark still qualifies her for NCAA regional competition.
Debra Vento also earned points for the Blue Devil women with a third-place finish, coming in with a 1.87-meter (6-1.50) effort in the high jump. Vento, who qualified for nationals in the event last year and during the 2005 indoor season, established a new school record and earned an NCAA regional-qualifying mark with Saturday's finish. Jakenna Gilbert also competed in the high jump, coming in 14th with a 1.56-meter (5-1.25) mark in first attempt in the event this season.
Nick Schneider led the men's effort, coming in third in the 5,000-meter race in 14:18.81. Finishing in the top two spots were Florida State's Andrew Lemoncello, who won the 10,000-meter race Friday night and NC State's Andy Smith, yesterday's winner in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Jade Ellis joined the All-ACC ranks with a third-place finish in the triple jump. Ellis, the school record holder in the event, finished with a 15.44-meter (50-8.00) mark against two mile per hour winds to earn yet another NCAA regional qualifying mark.
Paris Edwards, Natasha Roetter and Tia Ferguson all ran in the 5,000-meter run on the women's side. Edwards crossed the line in 12th place in 17:21.31, followed by Roetter in 17th at 17:45.13 and Ferguson in 26th place with a time of 18:18.10.
In the men's 1,500-meter final, Schneider placed sixth in an NCAA regional-qualifying time of 3:51.72. Dan King represented Duke in the 800-meter run, marking the first time a Blue Devil runner has qualified for that final race in two decades. He placed seventh in the event with a time of 48.80, missing the IC4A qualifying time by just a half-second.
In other competition Saturday, Palmer FitzHugh took 21st in the discus with a 34.28-meter (112-6) toss, while the women's 4x100 relay placed 11th in 50.27 and the men's 4x100 went 42.21 to take 10th, beating Virginia Tech's group by just under three-tenths of a second. The women's 4x400 relay came in ninth with a season-best time of 3:53.97, just under two seconds ahead of NC State's team, followed by the men's 4x400 relay team taking sixth place. In the men's pole vault, the final event to conclude, Jon Fay leapt to a 4.80m (15-9.00), IC4A qualifying mark.
