Winners of five straight games, third-ranked Duke (23-2, 9-1 ACC) will host Clemson (7-16, 1-9 ACC) on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils, ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press and No. 4 in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Poll, have won 31 straight home ACC contests and 18 consecutive overall home games.
Noting The Blue Devils...
Gail Goestenkors notched her 150th ACC victory on Sunday ... Duke continues to lead the nation in blocks with 8.1 a game ... Mistie Williams and Monique Currie rank tied for second in the ACC with six double-doubles ... Alison Bales has blocked more shots (95) than Duke's opponents (86) ... A Look At Clemson...
Clemson enters Thursday with a 7-16 overall and 1-9 ACC ledger. Clemson is led by Reggie Maddox (9.7 points, 5.0 rebounds), D'Lesha Lloyd (9.3 points, 4.0 rebounds) and Julie Talley (7.8 points, 36 treys).
The Lady Tigers owns four players who have hit 24 or more three-pointers on the year. Head Coach Jim Davis is in his 19th year and owns a 373-201 record.
The Series With Clemson...
Clemson leads the overall series 32-26, but Duke has won 11 of the last 14 games dating back to the 1997-98 season. The Blue Devils have won the past seven games in a row against Clemson by a combined 184 points (26.3 a game). Duke owns a 15-9 record at home versus Clemson and have won the past nine in a row. Last season, Duke won 102-45 versus Clemson in Durham, which is the largest margin of victory by Duke over the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Tigers defeated Duke, 93-75, at Clemson in 2000-01, which was the last time Clemson has knocked off the Blue Devils.
Currie Suffers Stress Fractures...
After the Miami game on Feb. 3, the Duke Medical Staff diagnosed junior Monique Currie with stress fractures in her second and third metatarsals of her left foot. Currie was fitted with orthotics and has played the past two games averaging 14.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals.
On the season, Currie is averaging 18.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.3 steals and boasts a 1.2 assist/turnover ratio.
She is the only player in the ACC that ranks in the top-five of the ACC stats in both scoring and rebounding. Currie now owns six double-doubles this season, which ranks tied for second in the ACC. Currie has scored 20 or more points 10 times, which also ranks tied for second in the ACC.
In the ACC stats, Currie ranks fourth in scoring (18.0), fifth in rebounding (7.5), 14th in field goal percentage (45.4), 15th in assists (3.24), 10th in free throw percentage (78.0), eighth in steals (2.32), 13th in assist/turnover ratio (1.17) and fourth in defensive rebounds (5.12).
The Last Time Out...
Monique Currie scored 14 points, and No. 3 Duke beat 19th-ranked Maryland 60-49 on Sunday before the largest crowd to watch an Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball game.
Chante Black had 13 rebounds and eight points, and Wanisha Smith scored 13 for the Blue Devils (23-2, 9-1). It was Duke's 11th straight victory over Maryland and fifth consecutive overall.
Shay Doron scored 18 and Kalika France had 13 for the Terrapins (17-6, 6-5) in front of a crowd of 17,243.
Most of them went home disappointed. The Terrapins had won four straight and lost by only three points at Duke last month, but Sunday they were 23-for-68 (34 percent) from the field and 1-for-6 at the foul line.
Currie, playing with two broken bones in her left foot, made only three of 12 field-goal tries. But she was 8-for-11 at the line and grabbed nine rebounds.
Down 27-23 at halftime, Maryland opened the second half with a 9-0 run during which Duke missed eight straight shots. Doron had five points in the surge, including one of the Terrapins' two three-pointers.
The Blue Devils responded with a 10-0 spree - two points apiece by five players - to go up 37-33 with 11:15 left. Maryland closed to 39-38 before a three-pointer by Smith and a 15-footer by Wynter Whitley put Duke ahead by six.
After Doron scored in the lane, Jessica Foley hit a three-pointer, and Black made two free throws to make it 49-40 with 2:33 to go.
Duke missed 13 of its first 16 shots, yet the game was tied at 12 after 13 minutes because the Terrapins were 6-for-23 from the field and missed all four foul shots.
Duke Players Versus Clemson..
In four career games against Clemson, Monique Currie owns averages of 13.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and has hit 50.0 percent of her field goals.
Black Named ACC Rookie of the Week...
Ever since freshman Chante Black started wearing her blue mouthpiece on Feb. 1, she has come off the bench to average 9.3 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and hitting 50.0 percent of her field goals in three games.
On Sunday at Maryland, Black came off the bench to score eight points, grab 13 rebounds, block four shots and had one steal in 23 minutes. For her efforts, she was named ACC Rookie of the Week for the first time this season.
Black started the first two games of her career at Duke before suffering an ankle injury late in the second game versus South Florida, which forced her to miss two games and two weeks of practice. On the season, she is averaging 5.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.0 assists. Her 7.1 rebounds ranks eighth, while her 1.5 blocks is fifth in the ACC.
More Duke Tidbits...
u Duke has played six out of its last nine games on the road, but will finish the season playing three of its final four games at home.
u Alison Bales and Chante Black combined for nine blocks at Maryland on Sunday. Bales needs four blocks to move into a tie for 25th place on the ACC all-time blocks list.
u Over the last five games, Jessica Foley is 7-of-26 from three-point land (26.9%).
u Mistie Williams is averaging only 5.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks the last three games.
Duke Bench Comes Alive...
On Sunday at Maryland, the Duke bench outscored Maryland's 19-2 led by senior Wynter Whitley (11) and Chante Black (8). Whitley played 19 minutes and hit 5-of-7 field goals and 1-of-1 from downtown. The three-pointer was Whitley's third of the season and her double-figure scoring was the fourth of the year and second against an ACC opponent.
Back At Home...
In 11 games at home this season, the Blue Devils have recorded an 11-0 record, averaged 82.8 points and won by an average of 30.1 points.
Duke is shooting 47.8 percent from the field and outrebounding opponents by a 10.6 clip. Monique Currie is averaging 18.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists, while Wanisha Smith is averaging 15.1 points, hitting 47.7 percent of her field goals and 38.7 percent from downtown. Smith has struggled on the road averaging 8.4 points and hitting 39.1 percent of her field goals. The Blue Devils boast four players averaging double-figure points at home-- Currie (18.5), Smith (15.1), Mistie Williams (11.6) and Jessica Foley (10.0).
The Blue Devils average 72.0 points, hit 43.4 percent of their field goals and are beating opponents by a 16.0 margin on the road.
Second Half Surge...
Junior Monique Currie has come up with some big second-half performances this season. Over the last eight games, Currie has averaged 18.9 points a game and 13.3 of those points have come in the second half. She hit the game-winning shots against Tennessee, N.C. State and Maryland so far this season. On Sunday at Maryland, Currie scored nine of Duke's final 11 points to close out the victory. Some of her top second half games include North Carolina (22), Maryland (18), Tennessee (16), Georgia Tech (16) and South Florida (15).
