The Florida State Seminoles defeated the Duke Blue Devils, 14-1, Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. Aaron Cheesman went 3-4 with two stolen bases, two runs and four RBIs to lead the 'Noles to victory. Sophomore Adam Murray led Duke with three hits.
Florida State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Duke starter Tim Layden struggled with control. After Bryan Zech and Eddy Martinez-Esteve drew walks, Cheesman recorded a two-run single to give the 'Noles the early lead.
FSU added to its lead with four runs on three walks and two hits in the third inning. Cheesman's second two-run single of the day put Florida State up, 4-0. The Seminoles added a run when Cheesman stole home on a double steal and Matt Sauls scored on a passed ball.
The 'Noles took a 10-0 lead with four runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Ryne Malone.
Duke got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth. Murray led off with his second single of the day and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Brian Hernandez.
Daniel Wardell's three-run double highlighted FSU's four-run eighth inning as the Seminoles increased the lead to 14-1.
Layden (5-4) took the loss after giving up 10 runs on seven hits and six walks in 4.0 innings. Junior Jim Perry pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Blue Devils and Tallahassee native freshman Tony Bajoczky pitched one perfect inning in his return to his hometown.
Rhett James (7-2) allowed just one run on six hits and one walk while striking out five to earn the win.
FSU stole a season-high 10 bases in the game.
Duke (23-25, 7-12 ACC) and Florida State (32-19, 11-8 ACC) continue their three-game series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
