After notching the 2004 Junkanoo Jam title on Sunday, the ninth-ranked Duke Blue Devils will travel to fourth-ranked Tennessee on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. tilt. The contest will be played in the Thompson-Boling Arena and will be aired on ESPN2.
Calling the game for ESPN2 will be Dave Pasch (pxp) and Anne Meyers (color). The contest will also be aired on WDNC-AM 620 radio with Steve Barnes (pxp) and Missy Anderson (color) calling the action.
Duke will be playing its fourth ranked opponent in seven games and its third over the last four contests.
Noting The Blue Devils...
Jessica Foley had a streak of five straight games with a trey broken on Saturday ... Foley is writing a diary for www.GoDuke.com and www.espn.com ... the Blue Devils were down to a roster of eight players in the Notre Dame and Penn State contests ... Duke's six three-pointers made at Notre Dame was a season high ... Monique Currie has been named one of the top-five wing players in the nation by ESPN.com ... Currie has hit one three-pointer in each of her last four games ... Duke returns seven letterwinners and three starters off last year's 30-4 squad ... the Blue Devils boast a roster of nine eligible players as junior Lindsey Harding is suspended indefinitely and Emily Waner has to sit out this season after transferring from Colorado.
A Look At Tennessee...
Tennessee enters Thursday's contest with a record of 4-1 and is coming off a 54-48 victory over Temple on Sunday. The lone loss came at the hands of Texas, 74-59, on Nov. 25 in Austin, Texas.
The Lady Vols returned three starters and welcomed the top-rated recruiting class in the nation. Head Coach Pat Summitt is in her 31st year and owns an 856-168 record.
The Series With Tennessee...
Tennessee leads the overall series 4-2 and this will mark the first meeting for the teams in Knoxville, Tenn. Last season, the Lady Vols traveled to Durham, N.C., and knocked off top-ranked Duke, 72-69.
The previous meetings were all at neutral sites: Dec. 6, 1998, in the Disney Honda Elite Four as Tennessee won 74-60; on March 22, 1999, in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight as Duke won 69-63; on Dec. 27, 2001, in the ACC/SEC Shootout as Tennessee won 89-68; on Nov. 24, 2002, in the Jimmy V Women's Basketball Classic as Duke won 76-55 and on Apr. 6, 2003, in the NCAA Final Four as Tennessee won 66-56 in Atlanta, Ga. In her first two collegiate contests, freshman Chante Black has had two injuries, but has come back to play in the last two games. Against Davidson she suffered 11 stitches in her forehead and then against South Florida she turned her right ankle. The ankle injury forced her to miss the Notre Dame and Penn State contests.
The Last Time Out...
Monique Currie had 25 points and eight rebounds to lead No. 10 Duke to a 63-51 victory over No. 16 Kansas State in the Freeport Division championship game at the Junkanoo Jam. Alison Bales added 11 points and 13 rebounds for Duke (5-1), which shot 27-for-39 from the free-throw line.
Kendra Wecker led Kansas State (3-1) with 15 points. The Wildcats shot 8-for-12 from the line. Duke charged to a 12-0 lead, led 28-17 at the break, and scored the first 14 points of the second half. Kansas State closed within eight points in the second half, but was unable to complete the comeback.
Currie was named MVP of the tournament, while Wanisha Smith and Bales earned All-Tournament honors from the Blue Devils.
Currie Named ACC Player of the Week/MVP Of Junkanoo Jam...
Junior Monique Currie showed why she is a National Player of the Year candidate at the 2004 Junkanoo Jam as she was selected MVP after averaging 23.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocks in two contests. Not only did the 6-0 wing score, she showed off her defensive skills as she held All-America Kendra Wecker to only 15 points and 6-of-18 shooting from the field. This came one night after Wecker scored 41 points against Illinois State. For her efforts, she earned ACC Player of the Week honors on Monday. It marked the second time in her career she has earned the award and the first since her freshman year.
For the season, Currie is now averaging 18.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 0.7 blocks in 32.8 minutes. She has collected two double-doubles and leads the team with 37 free throws made.
Duke vs. The SEC...
The Blue Devils own a career record of 16-10 against Southeastern Conference opponents-- Alabama (0-1), Arkansas (2-1), Auburn (1-0), Florida (2-1), Georgia (2-0), Kentucky (2-0), LSU (1-1), Mississippi State (1-0), South Carolina (1-1), Tennessee (2-4) and Vanderbilt (2-1).
Revenge Once Again...
The upcoming Tennessee matchup on Thursday will mark a revenge game for the Blue Devils as the Lady Vols defeated Duke 66-56 in the NCAA Final Four in 2002-03 in Atlanta, Ga., and also knocked Duke off, 72-69, last season in Durham, N.C.
In the last 15 revenge games, Duke has boasted an 13-2 mark dating back to the 1999-00 season. The only losses came against Connecticut (77-65 in 2002-03 at Duke) and versus Tennessee (72-69 in 2003-04 at Duke).
Duke's Front Line Playing Strong...
The Blue Devils' front line of junior Mistie Williams, sophomore Alison Bales and freshman Chante Black are establishing themselves as one of the best post trios in the nation with their play of late. Between the three, they are averaging 29.0 points, 24.5 rebounds and 6.8 blocks a contest, while hitting 51.3 percent from the field.
They have totaled five double-doubles and eight or more rebounds 10 different times.
Alison Bales Comes Into Her Own In The Bahamas... Prior to the trip to the Bahamas over the weekend, sophomore center Alison Bales was averaging 7.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. Now the 6-7 native of Dayton, Ohio is averaging 9.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.2 blocks after collecting two double-doubles over the weekend.
Bales was named to the Junkanoo Jam All-Tournament team after averaging 12.0 points, 13.5 rebounds and 5.5 blocks in two contests. She also hit 61.5 percent of her field goals and 66.7 percent from the free throw line. Against Stephen F. Austin, Bales tied a career high with 13 points and had a career-best 14 rebounds and five blocks. Then, against 16th-ranked Kansas State she had 11 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks. She has totaled four or more blocks on four occasions this season.
