Blue Devil Wrestling Team Falls To The Citadel, 31-16

The Duke University wrestling team fell to 3-3 in dual meet action this season with a 31-16 loss to The Citadel on Saturday. Christian Smith, Michael Mitchell, Frank Cornely and Tim Marcantonio scored victories for the Blue Devils. The Citadel, which improves to 6-2 on the year, used four falls and a major decision to give the Bulldogs their sixth dual win of the 2003-04 campaign.
Duke jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a major decision in the 125-pound match as Christian Smith defeated Bulldog junior Brad Ragan 11-1. The win was Smith's 20th of the season. The Citadel quickly rebounded to take the lead 6-4 as 133-pound Sean Markey pinned sophomore Bryan Gibson at the 1:29 mark. Markey, who is ranked 16th in the nation, now has 17 pins on the season placing him second in the nation in pins.
The Bulldogs' Levi Duyn followed Markey's lead as he pushed The Citadel's lead to 12-4 with a pin of the Blue Devils' Daniel Shvartsman in the 141-pound match. Duyn, who is ranked 19th, tallied his tenth pin of the season tying him for fourth in the nation at 141-pounds.
Sophomore Travis Piccard propelled the Bulldogs to a 16-4 advantage with a major decision over Duke's Antwone Floyd. Piccard, a 149-pounder, defeated Floyd 15-4. Fellow sophomore Dan Thompson continued to boost The Citadel's lead to 19-4 with a 9-5 win over the Blue Devils' Brandon Foose in the 157-pound bout.
The Blue Devils responded, as Michael Mitchell was victorious over 165-pound Bulldog Mike Martinez. Mitchell's win, his 16 of the season, narrowed the Citadel lead to 19-7.
The Citadel's Keith Clifton, a junior from Colleyville, TX, put the match out of reach, 25-7, as he pinned Levi Craig in the 174-pound contest. Clifton, who is ranked 18th by The Wrestling Mall, pinned Craig at the 2:20 mark.
In the 184-pound match Frank Cornely pinned Bulldog sophomore John Dickerson at the 2:05 mark to get Duke with 12 points, 25-13. Tim Marcantonio continued Duke's winning ways as he downed The Citadel's lone senior Jordan Everett 14-8 in the 197-pound match.
Cornely and Marcantonio's wins drew Duke to within nine at 25-16, but Citadel heavyweight Billy Linane clinched the match by pinning Roy Williams 46 seconds into the final match. Linane's victory gave the Bulldogs a decisive 31-16 win over the Duke Blue Devils.
