DURHAM, N.C. - The Associated Press All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) women's basketball teams for 2003 were released on Tuesday with the Blue Devils registering three players on the All-ACC and two on the All-Freshman teams. The All-ACC first, second and third teams along with the All-Freshman team is voted on by the Atlantic Coast Sports Writers Association. A total of 50 members voted.
On the All-ACC team, Duke juniors Alana Beard and Iciss Tillis led all voting for the second consecutive season with 150 and 147 votes, respectively, being named first team All-ACC. Beard was the only player who received all 50 first place votes for the second consecutive year, while Tillis was second with 47. Junior Vicki Krapohl was also named third team All-ACC with 24 votes. It marks the third year in a row Duke has posted two players on the first team and the third year in a row with three players named All-ACC.
Beard, a six-time ACC Player of the Week selection this season, currently leads the ACC in scoring (22.5), field goal percentage (.552) ranks sixth in rebounding (6.8), second in steals (2.97), fifth in blocks (1.17) and fourth in free throw percentage (.791). The native of Shreveport, La., has totaled five double-doubles in ACC play, which is tied for second in the league. Beard's season is highlighted by a 41-point performance at Virginia and has posted 20 games with 20 or more points.
Tillis, native of Tulsa, Okla., ranks in the top 10 of six different ACC categories. One of the most versatile players in the nation, Tillis is averaging 14.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.17 steals, 1.1 blocks and has hit 46.0 percent of her field goals. She ranks tied second in the ACC with eight double-doubles this season and has earned ACC Player of the Week on three occasions. Both Tillis and Beard are two of the 13 finalists for the Wade Trophy as the National Player of the Year.
Krapohl was selected third team All-ACC for the first time in her career after leading the ACC in 3-point field goal percentage with an incredible 42.5 mark. The 5-5 point guard from Mount Pleasant, Mich. ranks 14th in the ACC in assists (3.0), third in 3-point field goals made (1.76) and second in assist/turnover ratio (2.02). Krapohl has started 58 consecutive games for the second-ranked Blue Devils.
For the third consecutive season, Duke posted two members on the Associated Press All-Freshman team as Mistie Bass and Lindsey Harding each were selected. Both have played key minutes for the Blue Devils this season starting a combined 23 games.
Bass started 15 games for Duke before Harding joined the lineup eight games ago. A native of Janesville, Wisc., Bass is averaging 7.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 0.8 blocks on the season, while Harding is averaging 5.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals. Beard was also named to the All-ACC Defensive team by the nine ACC women's basketball head coaches. It marks the third consecutive season Beard has been named to the team. Duke just finished off its second consecutive 16-0 ACC regular season and is heading to the ACC Tournament on Friday. The Blue Devils (28-1) are seeded first and will take on ninth-seeded Wake Forest at 8:00 PM in the Greensboro Coliseum.
