Stats
Senior Elize van Ballegooie (Zwolle, The Netherlands/Thorbecke) scored two goals and sophomore Veerle Goudswaard (Houten, The Netherlands/St. Bonifatius) had a goal and an assist to lead James Madison (2-0) to a 3-2 field hockey win over visiting Duke (2-1) Saturday afternoon at Bridgeforth Stadium.
Duke junior Kim Van Kirk (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Notre Dame) got the Blue Devils on the scoreboard 13:03 into the game with her third goal of the season. Off a penalty-corner play, Van Kirk rebounded a shot by senior Chrissy Ashley (Plains, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and struck the ball into the cage beating JMU red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Lori Amico (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot).
Just 10 minutes later JMU was awarded a penalty stroke when a Duke defender played the ball with her hand. Van Ballegooie put the shot past Duke goalkeeeper Erica Perrier (St. Lambert, Quebec/MacDonald Center) to tie the game at 1-1 at 23:02. Five minutes later, on a JMU penalty-corner, Goudswaard delivered a pass to van Ballegooie, who scored from 10 yards out for a 2-1 JMU lead at 28:20.
Early in the second half, Goudswaard got the ball on a breakaway and out-raced three Duke defenders down the right side of the field. She beat Perrier and shot on an open cage for JMU's third goal and a 3-1 lead at 46:07.
The Blue Devils answered at the 49:32 mark when junior Kim Gogola (White House Station, N.Y./Hunterdon Central) scored on a hard shot taken just inside the penalty circle. It was Gogola's second goal on the young season.
Each team had six first-half shots on goal, but Duke out-shot JMU 14-2 in the second half and held a 20-8 advantage for the game. Amico, however, who stepped in for red-shirt senior goalkeeper Kiernan Raffo (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox), made 10 saves and JMU's field defenders made a number of key stops to help hold off the Blue Devils. Raffo had left the game with back spasms after playing just under 10 minutes.
Duke's next game is Saturday, September 14 at Old Dominion. The Blue Devils also play at Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, September 15.
