DURHAM, N.C. (March 30) - Andres Pedroso and Yorke Allen each posted straight-set singles victories to lead third-ranked Duke to a 5-1 win over 26th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth in men's tennis action on March 30 in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils, winners of 14 straight home matches, improve to 13-3 on the year while the Rams fall to 13-8.
Duke swept the doubles competition to pick up the doubles point.
Pedroso, ranked 28th nationally, pushed the Duke lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mats Norin at number four, and then Allen downed Ruben Zrihen, 6-4, 6-1, at number six for a 3-0 advantage.
Phillip King, ranked ninth in the country, followed by clinching the match with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory over 88th-ranked Frank Moser at number two. After 60th-ranked Florian Marquardt upended seventh-ranked Ramsey Smith at number one in three sets for the Rams' lone point, 14th-ranked Marko Cerenko rounded out the day's scoring with a three-set win over Fernando Sanchez.
At number five singles, Joel Spicher and Daniel Casquero failed to finish.
Duke returns to ACC play on Sunday by hosting Florida State at 1:30 p.m. while Virginia Commonwealth hosts Clemson also on Sunday.
