Upcoming Event: Track & Field versus Duke Invitational on April 8, 2026

The first half of the contest was a stalemate between the two teams, as both combined for only three first-half shots. In the second half, Virginia came out aggressively and scored the game's first goal at the 27:00 mark when sophomore Molly McManus blasted a shot by Duke junior goalkeeper Hallie Smith.
Duke responded to Virginia's lead by dominating the last twenty minutes of the second half, registering seven penalty corners in the last thirteen minutes and outshooting the Cavaliers 9-4 in the second half . Duke senior Courtney Sommer and junior Liz Bateman narrowly missed goals when Virginia senior goalie Becky Worthington made two impressive saves.
Duke had two penalty corner chances in the last minute of the second half and finally converted on the second one when junior Melissa Yuppa shot the ball pass Worthington to tie the game at 1-1 with 7 seconds remaining in regulation. Sommer registered the assist for the Blue Devils.
In overtime, the two teams traded possessions. Blue Devil junior Robin Merritt had a chance to notch the game-winning goal when her cross-cage shot missed the Virginia goal by inches. Goodloe later scored on a nearly identical play at the other end of the field with 2:47 left in overtime to secure the win for the Cavaliers, who move on to face No.1 seed North Carolina Friday night at 7pm.
I was really proud of our kids, Duke coach Liz Tchou said. We've had a lot of games where we've been very close [to winning]. We had so many opportunities, and I just want to say I'm really proud of the way [our players] fought. They really wanted it, and they played with passion and heart.
Duke finishes the season with a 7-12 record.
