Rutgers opened up the scoring midway through the second half as Mike Walsh found the nets at 52:30. That goal sparked the Duke attack with sophomore Scott Noble tying the contest on a score at 65:45, assisted by freshman Trevor Perea and senior Troy Garner. Less than a minute later at 66:38, freshman Donald McIntosh found the right corner of the goal for Duke, assisted by sophomore Scott Noble and freshman Robert Antoniou, to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead. But the Blue Devils failed to close it out as Rutgers' Brian Piesner once again knotted the match with a goal at 88:12. A pair of sudden-death overtimes made no difference as the game ended with a 2-2 score.
Connecticut's Edwin Rivera proved to be the hero in the first game, scoring all three goals for the Huskies. Rivera's first score came at the 39:15 mark of the match, assisted by Luis Arauz and Darin Lewis. Rivera added a second goal a little over a minute later at 40:46 with assists credited to Lewis and Brent Rahim. The final goal from Rivera put the match out of reach for N.C. State at 71:32, assisted by Donny Mark.
