NEED TO KNOW

Second-ranked Duke (2-0-1) will close a two-game homestand Sunday, Aug. 23 as the Blue Devils host Rhode Island (1-1-1) at 6 p.m., inside Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium.
The match will be aired live on the ACC Network Extra with Dean Linke calling the action.
Duke is in a stretch where the Blue Devils are playing three out of four games in Durham. The other contest will be at Old Dominion Aug. 27.
Over the past five years, Duke owns a record of 18-2-1 in the month of August.
The Duke senior duo of Cameron Roller and Mia Oliaro were named captains for 2026.
Head coach Kieran Hall is in his second year as the head coach of the Blue Devils, after leading Duke to the NCAA College Cup in 2025 with a 17-5-1 record.
The Blue Devils return eight starters and features a roster that has scored 91 career goals entering 2026.
The No. 3 preseason ranking for Duke marks the fourth time in the last five seasons the Blue Devils have been a preseason top-five team and the 10th time in school history.

STORYLINES/OTHER BLUE DEVIL NOTES

Sam Courtwright was named to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week Tuesday following her one goal and two assists opening week as a Blue Devil. She was also a finalist for the IWSOC Player of the Week as well.
In 38 matches at home, Mia Minestrella has scored 24 goals.
Duke secured its first shutout of 2026 as Molly Vapensky and Caroline Dysart combined for the clean sheet against FIU.
Phoebe Goldthwaite started her fifth career game and first of 2026 against FIU and played a career-best 90 minutes. She added an assist.
Avery Oder has now scored in the season opener in back-to-back seasons as she notched one goal last year against Penn State. She has two goals over the first three contests in 2026.

The United Soccer Coaches released its preseason watch lists with four Blue Devils earning honors -- Sam Courtwright (Midfielder to Watch), Cameron Roller (Defender to Watch), Katie Shea Collins (Forward to Watch) and Mia Minestrella (Forward to Watch).
Duke features four players who have been named an All-America during their collegiate careers -- Mia Minestrella (2025), Katie Shea Collins (2025), Cameron Roller (2024) and Sam Courtwright (2023).
Last year, Kieran Hall became just the third Division I women's soccer coach in NCAA history to take a team to the NCAA College Cup in their first year as a head coach -- Damon Nahas of UNC in 2024 and Marguerie Bates (Aozasa) of UCLA in 2022.

Rhode Island owns a 1-1-1 record on the season with the lone win coming against Maine in the opener, 1-0.
Nicolasa Jacobs has scored the Rams' only goal of the season.
The Rams have totaled two shutouts on defense in three matches.

Duke owns a record of 23-2 all-time against Atlantic 10 opponents – Davidson (9-0), Dayton (2-0), Fordham (1-0), George Mason (2-0), George Washington (1-2), La Salle (1-0), Richmond (3-0), Saint Louis (3-0) and VCU (1-0).

Duke senior Mia Minestrella played her last season of club soccer (Beach FC) and three years of high school soccer with Nika Jacobs of Rhode Island.

FIRST HALF GOALS

Over the first three games, Duke has scored eight goals and all eight have come in the first half.
Both goals the Blue Devils have allowed have come in the second half.
Duke has outshot opponents, 16-2, in the first half and outshot foes, 19-10, in the second.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

The Blue Devils boast an 86-15-11 record at Koskinen Stadium since the start of the 2017 campaign.
In the first half the Blue Devils allowed only four goals at home in 2025.
Duke has outscored its opponents 98-15 at home over the last three seasons. The Blue Devils totaled a program-record 50 goals at home in 2024, passing the previous mark of 40 from 2017. Duke notched 42 goals at home in 2025.
In 2025, Duke outscored opponents 42-10 at home with Mia Minestrella (12), Avery Oder (5) and Mia Oliaro (2) leading the way.
Mia Oliaro collected 11 assists in 15 home matches in 2025.
Mia Minestrella has played in 38 matches at home over her career and notched 24 goals, 11 assists and notched 59 points. She had 12 goals, four assists and 28 points in 15 games a season ago. Minestrella registered two goals in the home opener Thursday against FIU.

In looking at the NCAA D-I stats over the last three years (2024, 2025, 2026), Mia Minestrella has scored the second-most goals nationally -- Izzy Engle (38, Notre Dame), Minestrella (33, Duke) and Hope Leyba (30, Colorado) are the top three nationally.

HIGH-SCORING TANDEM

Duke features one of the top scoring tandems in collegiate soccer with Mia Minestrella and Katie Shea Collins.
They have combined to score 58 goals over the last three years.
So far this season, Minestrella has three goals and Collins has scored two.

COURTWRIGHT NETS HONORS

Following a solid first week as a Blue Devil, Duke redshirt junior Sam Courtwright was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week, as announced Tuesday.
In her first two games as a Blue Devil, Courtwright registered a goal and two assists as Duke traveled to California to face Southern California and No. 9 UCLA.
Courtwright, a native of Dallas, Texas, turned in two assists over the first 12:04 of her Duke debut Wednesday at Southern California. She assisted on goals at the 1:18 and 12:04 marks of the first period and Duke went on to earn a 3-1 victory. The pair of goals scored in the first 12:04 of the season opener marked the third-quickest two-goal stretch in Blue Devil history.
Duke closed the trip at No. 9 UCLA and Courtwright struck early with a free kick goal only 2:05 into the match to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. It marked her first goal as a Blue Devil and 10th of her collegiate career.

MOVING UP RECORD CHARTS

Duke senior Mia Minestrella currently ranks seventh on Duke's all-time goals scored list with 33 goals. She needs one more to move into a tie for sixth along with KayAnne Gummersall (34).
Minestrella also needs two points to move into a tie for eighth on Duke's all-time points list.
With her brace against FIU, Minestrella owns six multi-goal performances to rank tied for fifth along with Kim DeCesare.
Mia Oliaro enters the 2026 season with 25 assists, which ranks No. 6 all-time on Duke's record books. She needs four more to move into a tie for fifth.
