NEED TO KNOW

Coming off a 3-1 victory on the road at Southern California, the third-ranked Duke women's soccer team will close its two-game California trip Sunday, Aug. 16 at ninth-ranked UCLA. The contest will feature an opening kick at 9 p.m. ET at Wallis Annenberg Stadium in Los Angeles.
The match will be aired live on the Big Ten Network+ with Nick Koop (PXP) and Cate Frist (Analyst) calling the action.
As a head coach, Kieran Hall will be going for his second win against a top 10 team when Duke faces No. 9 UCLA.
The Blue Devils have taken 11 members of its squad to their home state of California for the season-opening trip.
Head coach Kieran Hall is his second year as the head coach of the Blue Devils, after leading Duke to the NCAA College Cup in 2025 with a 17-5-1 record.
Following its season-opening West Coast trip, Duke will play three out of the next four contests at home in Durham.
Duke returns eight starters and features a roster that has scored 91 career goals entering 2026.
The No. 3 ranking for Duke marks the fourth time in the last five seasons the Blue Devils have been a preseason top-five team and the 10th time in school history.

STORYLINES/OTHER BLUE DEVIL NOTES

After only seeing action in 34 minutes in one match as a rookie, sophomore Molly Vapensky made her first collegiate start and secured the win at USC. She played the entire 90 minutes.
Avery Oder has now scored in the season opener in back-to-back seasons as she notched one goal last year against Penn State.
Senior Sam Bodensteiner made her second collegiate start and first since 2024 on defense.
Over the past five years, Duke owns a record of 17-2 in the month of August.
Duke opened the season against a Big Ten opponent for the second year in a row. The Blue Devils defeated 11th-ranked Penn State a year ago in Durham, 3-2.
Cameron Roller has started 54 matches in a row as a Blue Devil.
The United Soccer Coaches released its preseason watch lists with four Blue Devils earning honors -- Sam Courtwright (Midfielder to Watch), Cameron Roller (Defender to Watch), Katie Shea Collins (Forward to Watch) and Mia Minestrella (Forward to Watch).
The Blue Devils boasted 91 career goals scored on the 2026 team entering the season. Mia Minestrella (30) and Katie Shea Collins (23) have scored 53 of those goals.
Duke features four players who have been named an All-America during their collegiate careers -- Mia Minestrella (2025), Katie Shea Collins (2025), Cameron Roller (2024) and Sam Courtwright (2023).
Last year, Kieran Hall became just the third Division I women's soccer coach in NCAA history to take a team to the NCAA College Cup in their first year as a head coach -- Damon Nahas of UNC in 2024 and Marguerie Bates (Aozasa) of UCLA in 2022.
Over the last two years, Duke has sent eight alumnae to the NWSL -- Hannah Bebar (Bay FC), Leah Freeman (San Diego Wave FC), Maggie Graham (Houston Dash), Ella Hase (Racing Louisville FC), Mary Long (Kansas City Current), Carina Lageyre (Angel City FC), Kat Rader (Houston Dash) and Devin Lynch (Denver Summit).

THE SERIES WITH UCLA

Duke and UCLA will meet for the eighth time in program history with the Bruins leading the series, 5-1-1.
The two teams last met on Sept. 1, 2022 in Durham, with UCLA posting a 2-1 victory.
In matches played in Los Angeles, Duke possesses an 0-2 record.
The two meetings came in NCAA Tournament action, with UCLA winning 2-0 in 2004 and 6-1 in 2008. Duke's lone victory in the series came on Sept. 15, 1996, with the Blue Devils earning a 2-1 win in Chapel Hill.

SCOUTING UCLA

UCLA enters Sunday's match with a 0-1 record, after falling, 2-1, to BYU Wednesday in the season opener.
Kara Croone scored UCLA's lone goal as BYU outshot the Bruins, 14-10.

AGAINST THE BIG TEN

Duke owns a record of 38-24-7 all-time against Big Ten opponents -- Illinois (0-1), Indiana (1-0), Maryland (15-12-6), Michigan State (1-0), Minnesota (1-0), Nebraska (3-3), Northwestern (2-0), Ohio State (6-2), Penn State (2-4-1), Rutgers (4-1), Southern California (3-2) and Wisconsin (2-1).
Duke went 3-0 against the Big Ten in 2025 with wins over Penn State, Northwestern and Washington by a combined 9-2 score.

DEVILISH DEBUTS

Duke's All-America transfers - Katie Shea Collins and Sam Courtwright -- turned in impressive debuts at Southern California combining for one goal and three assists.
Courtwright collected assists on the first two goals of the match and now owns 17 over her career.
Collins notched Duke's third goal and assisted on the Blue Devils' first tally only 1:18 into the match. Over her career, Collins has registered 24 goals and nine assists for 57 points.
Freshmen Yuna Marui and Natalie Chudowsky started their first collegiate games. Marui played 72 minutes, while Chudowsky saw action in the entire 90 minutes.
They became the fifth and sixth freshmen to start their first collegiate match under head coach Kieran Hall. The duo is the 66th and 67th Duke freshmen in program history to do so.
Duke freshmen Rylee McLanahan and Sofia Nuñez came off the bench and made their Duke debut as well.

QUICK GOALS...

Mia Minestrella's goal only 1:18 into the match with Southern California was the third-quickest goal to open the season in program history.
Duke then scored its second goal by Avery Oder only 12:04 into the match, which was the third-quickest pair of goals in Duke history.
With Katie Shea Collins' goal at the 30:25 mark, it was the fifth-quickest to three goals in Duke lore.
