DURHAM, N.C.—Duke men's lacrosse senior
Aidan Maguire made history Tuesday evening as the first short stick defensive midfielder to be selected No. 1 overall in a professional lacrosse draft as the Utah Archers took Maguire with the first pick in the 2026 PLL College Draft.
Maguire is Duke's fourth No. 1 overall pick in an outdoor professional lacrosse draft, joining Ned Crotty (2010), Myles Jones (2016) and Brennan O'Neill (2024). He reunites with former Blue Devil Dyson Williams on the Archers.
A generational defensive midfielder, Maguire has left an indelible mark on the Duke program and the Blue Devil record book. He recently was one of two players to be a unanimous first-team choice to the Inside Lacrosse Mid-Season All-America team.
The Hingham, Massachusetts native has led Duke's rope unit throughout his time in Durham, earning consensus All-America first team recognition last season. The 2025 Lt. Donald MacLaughlin National Midfielder of the Year and ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Maguire is a true two-way player as one of the top takeaway artists in lacrosse and an incredible threat in transition.
Last season, Maguire recorded 26 caused turnovers to tie for fifth among SSDM's in NCAA single-season history and seventh overall in Blue Devil lore. He also picked up 57 ground balls and added six goals and four assists.
Maguire has added 12 caused turnovers to his career total this season, helping anchor the nation's sixth-ranked scoring defense. He has at least one caused turnover in eight games this season and in all but nine of his past 29 outings.
Playing in 67 career games, the speedy midfielder has 63 caused turnovers to rank sixth in Duke career history. A threat in transition, he has added 17 goals and 14 assists for 31 points. The 31 points rank second among Duke defensive midfielders in the past 20 years. First-team All-American Will Haus '15 had 36 points in 79 career games.
The Blue Devils are ranked 16th in the latest USILA poll and welcome No. 1 Notre Dame to Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium Saturday, April 18. Faceoff is set for noon on ESPNU.
