DURHAM, N.C. - Duke's pitching tandem of
Andy Leon and
Jack Hedrick combined to allow just one run and two hits in Duke's 6-1 victory over Milwaukee in the series finale on Sunday, Feb. 22. The Blue Devils (7-2) scored three runs in a pair of innings, highlighted by the first Duke home run for
Bobby Marsh in the seventh inning.
In a designated bullpen game, Leon earned the start and win, facing just one over the minimum and striking out seven in four innings of work. Hedrick threw the final five innings, scattering two hits and striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Andy Leon started the game with two strikeouts in the first inning, erasing the only Milwaukee base runner he allowed all afternoon, Dominic Kibler, who reached after getting hit by a pitch.
- Leon struck out the side in the top of the second on 16 pitches and Duke took the lead in the bottom half, scoring three runs. A double steal opened the scoring, with Tyler Albright coming home as Bobby Marsh swiped second. An RBI triple from Brooks Perez brought home Marsh, and Perez ran home on an RBI single off of the bat of Adam Troch.
- Leon retired the side in order in the top of the third, needing only nine pitches, and closed his outing with his seventh strikeout to end the fourth.
- Jack Hedrick entered to pitch at the start of the fifth frame, retiring the first five batters he faced before allowing the first Milwaukee hit of the game with two outs in the top of the sixth.
- Duke doubled its lead in the bottom of the seventh, with Marsh clubbing a three-run home run, the first of his Duke career, with two outs.
- Milwaukee broke up Duke's shutout bid with an unearned run with two outs in the top of the ninth, as Charlie Marion came home on a throwing error.
- Hedrick recorded the final out two batters later, capping the dominant pitching effort.
