Gameday Auction for We Back Pat and New Heights Elementary
The Blue Devils will be holding a silent auction inside Cameron Indoor Stadium during the next two home games – Jan. 15 and Jan. 18 – with 100 percent of the proceeds being split between the We Back Pat Foundation and New Heights Elementary School in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
The items being auctioned will be purple We Back Pat shooting shirts the Blue Devils will wear during warmups, purple quarter-zips the Duke staff will wear for the game as well as a unique pair of gold Nike Kobe shoes gifted to Duke head coach Kara Lawson following the USA Women's Basketball team's gold-medal performance at the Paris Olympics.
The Opening Tip
Duke puts its eight-game win streak to the test Thursday against Virginia. The Blue Devils are 11-6 overall, 6-0 in league action with their last loss coming Dec. 4 against LSU. The 6-0 start in ACC play matches Duke's best under head coach Kara Lawson. The Blue Devils also started the 2022-23 season 6-0 before losing to No. 17 North Carolina in the seventh game. The last time a Duke team won more than six conference games to start was in 2012-23 - going 15-0 en route to a 17-1 conference record.
Duke's six losses are against the current NET No. 5 LSU, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 South Carolina, No. 18 West Virginia, No. 29 Baylor and No. 73 South Florida. The Blue Devils are led on offense by sophomore Toby Fournier's 17.2 points per game. Taina Mair is having a career year, averaging 12.0 points, 5.1 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game. Ashlon Jackson is dropping 12.5 points per game and a team-best 34 three-pointers. Fournier and Delaney Thomas lead the charge on the glass, averaging 7.2 and 5.9 rebounds per game, respectively. Thomas also contributes 10.5 points per game on a team-high 63 percent shooting. Fournier is the top rim protector, averaging 2.4 blocks per game.
Virginia is coming off its first ACC setback Sunday, falling to Syracuse at home, 79-60. The Orange scored 29 points off of the Cavaliers' 21 turnovers to come away with the win. Kymora Johnson is an elite guard in the ACC, averaging 18.4 points, 6.5 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 38 percent from three. She is the lone player to average double-digit points with Tabitha Amanze at 9.9 and Sa'Myah Smith and Paris Clark at 9.8. The Cavaliers are fourth in the league in scoring offense (77.1) and fifth in three-point percentage (.325).
Duke and Virginia meet up for the 81st time overall with the Blue Devils holding a 43-35 lead in the series. Duke has won five straight against the Cavaliers and last lost to UVA inside Cameron, Jan. 30, 2000 - a 61-49 setback.
Last Time Out Notes
For the second game in a row, Delaney Thomas led the Duke offense, finishing with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor and 5-7 at the free throw line to lead Duke past Stanford. She also collected six rebounds in the victory.
Jordan Wood was crucial on the offensive glass, getting a career-high five offensive boards. Duke held a 9-8 edge in second-chance points against the Cardinal.
For the 10th time this season, Duke scored 20-plus points off turnovers, getting 21 against Stanford. The Blue Devils forced Stanford into 19 turnovers - the fourth most by the Cardinal this season. Offensively, Duke committed just eight turnovers - the second fewest in a game this season.
Inside The ACC
Duke and Louisville are the lone teams to remain unbeaten in league play, sporting 6-0 records. Those two teams meet Feb. 5.
Duke's offense has come alive in conference play, ranking second in offensive rebounds (14.2), turnovers (13.7) and assist to turnover ratio (1.32) and fourth in the league in scoring offense (78.0).
Individually, Toby Fournier ranks fifth in the league in scoring at 17.8 points per game after six games. Ashlon Jackson (4.8) and Taina Mair (4.3) are fifth and seventh in assists, respectively. Duke and Georgia Tech are the only teams to have two players averaging at least 4.0 assists per game in league play.
Defensively, Duke is third in the ACC in scoring defense (59.3 ppg) and fourth in opponent field goal percentage (.381). The Blue Devils are fifth in overall rebounding (41.5) and rebound margin (6.0).

Virginia is playing just its fifth road game of the year, going 3-1 in the previous four. The Cavaliers are coming off a tough loss Syracuse in Charlottesville. Scoring is balanced for UVA with eight players averaging at least five points per game. Averaging 9.8 points per game in her six games, Sa'Myah Smith missed the past two games after averaging 33 minutes per game in the previous two.
