Schutz Joins Blue Devils as Assistant Coach for Track & Field

DURHAM, N.C. – A. Morris Williams Jr., Track & Field Director Shawn Wilbourn announced the addition of Jason Schutz as an assistant coach to the Blue Devils' staff. Schutz arrives in Durham following a four-year stint coaching the throws unit at the University of Washington.
"Coach Jason Schutz transitions to Duke after a stellar career at the University of Washington and I am confident that he will continue to recruit and produce that same level of talent here at Duke," said Wilbourn. "Our throwers are in good hands. Jason is a great coach and an even better person, and I'm very excited to bring him onto our staff."
Schutz, a former All-American and Olympic Trials competitor with nearly two decades of coaching experience, joins the Blue Devils following his second stint on Montlake. In his seven combined seasons at Washington (2016-18 and 2021-25), his throwers earned 13 All-America accolades – including six first-team honors – while five student-athletes broke school records.
"I am incredibly excited to be joining Duke track and field," Schutz said. "Coach Wilbourn and the staff he's assembled are moving the program in a fantastic direction and I'm excited for Duke throws to play an integral role in the success of the program in the coming years. My family and I are very thankful for the opportunity to be moving to the Durham area and to be a part of the future success of Blue Devil track and field."
Prior to his return to Washington, Schutz's spent three seasons as associate head coach at Northern Arizona (2018-2021). Schutz arrived at NAU following three seasons (2012-15) at Cal State Northridge. In his final season at Cal State Northridge, he helped the Matadors' women's team to a commanding Big West Team title that saw his throwers win three of the four individual Big West women's titles – two of which were captured by Monique Griffiths via a sweep of the discus and hammer throw – and contribute 49 points en route to CSUN totaling 212 points. Additionally, under Schutz's guidance, Griffiths advanced to the NCAA Championships in the women's hammer throw.

In 2014 Schutz helped guide the Matadors to the Big West Championships, where the Matador women scored a dominant 55 points in the throws, 20 points better than the next best throws group. Highlights from Schutz's first two years at Cal State Northridge included coaching Tucker Weathers, who would end his collegiate career as a two-time NCAA West Regional qualifier in the shot put. During that span, Griffiths completed a stellar freshman year as she qualified for the NCAA Preliminary Round in the discus and finished as one of the top freshmen in the NCAA. CSUN also had two women qualify for the USATF National Junior Championships in three events – Griffiths (discus and hammer) and classmate Jakayla Daniels in the shot put.

Prior to CSUN, Schutz coached for two seasons (2010-12) at the University of Pittsburgh. During his tenure there, the throws group improved dramatically, with the efforts spearheaded by Jess Rocco. Rocco qualified for the NCAA West Regional and the USATF National Junior Championships in the javelin and set a PR of 152-feet.

Schutz joined the Panthers after serving a year as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Colorado State, where he worked alongside his college coach, Brian Bedard. Additionally, Schutz worked as a strength coach for the athletic department, assisting with the track and field team.
During his collegiate career, Schutz was a three-time All-American – twice in the discus and once in the indoor weight throw – and also competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw. Schutz competed at three consecutive USA Outdoor Championships in the discus from 2007-09, including the 2008 Olympic Trials where he placed 16th. The Chromo, Colorado, native also made the most of his time in the classroom, earning Academic All-America honors. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in natural resource management with a minor in watershed science.

Schutz is married to the former Megan Morgan, a former Husky distance runner. The couple have one daughter, Abigail.
