Duke Heads to Georgia to Compete in the Classic City Clash

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke is set to travel to Georgia to compete in the Classic City Clash in Athens, where the Blue Devils will face Texas Tech, Alabama State and Georgia from Sept. 3-5.
Last Time Out
The Blue Devils opened the 2025 season posting a 3-1 triumph over Bryant, but fell to Houston, 3-0, and Florida International, 3-1. On Friday against Bryant, Duke tallied 54 kills, led by outside hitter Taylor Williams, who registered 18 on just two errors while hitting .327. Middle blocker Breonna Goss and outside hitter Ashby Zubchevich each added eight kills to fuel the attack. On the defensive side, three Blue Devils notched double-digit digs: libero Mailinh Godschall (20), Zubchevich (10) and libero Christina Barrow (10). Duke also totaled 20 blocks, with middle blockers Zoë Gillen-Malveaux and Ngozi Iloh recording six apiece.
Duke fell to Houston, 3-0, Saturday evening inside Cameron. Offensively, Williams led the attack with 10 kills, while Zubchevich added nine. Godschall garnered a game-best 20 digs, marking the second consecutive game she has tallied double-digit digs.
The Blue Devils closed out their opening weekend Sunday, falling 3-1 to FIU. Zubchevich led the offensive charge for the Blue Devils, logging a career-high 14 kills. Gillen-Malveaux hit a game-best .571 attack percentage and setter Millie Muir dished out a team-best 17 helpers. Defensively, Godschall tallied 14 digs, while Iloh earned five total blocks.
A Closer Look at the Series' History
Duke Against Texas Tech
- The Red Raiders lead the all-time series history against the Blue Devils, 3-0. The two teams haven't met in over two decades, with the last meeting coming during the 2000 season.
Duke Against Alabama State
- Thursday marks the first all-time series meeting between Duke and Alabama State.
Duke Against Georgia
- The Bulldogs own the series history against the Blue Devils, 13-6. In the last meeting between the two programs, Georgia posted a sweep inside Cameron Indoor Stadium during the 2019 season.
Scouting the Red Raiders
- The Red Raiders boast an overall record of 2-1. Last weekend, Texas Tech competed in the FAU Tournament, where it lost to Western Carolina (2-3), but picked up wins against FAU (3-0) and Kent State (3-1).
- Reagan Engler leads the attack for the Red Raiders, tallying 42 kills and averaging 3.50 kills per set, while Peyton Dunn leads the team in assists (70). Defensively, Sierra Grizzle boasts 66 digs and Aliyah McDonald boasts 12 blocks.
- Tony Graystone is in his 10th season with Texas Tech. He has picked up 572 career victories, including 132 triumphs with the Red Raiders.
Scouting the Hornets
- The Hornets opened the 2025 season dropping matches in straight sets to Arizona, Fresno State and Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
- Penny Lucas-White is in her 14th season at ASU. She has accumulated 440 career victories, including 248 with the Hornets.
- Jyriah Morgan leads the team with 39 kills and Kamrynn Clay leads the squad with 52 helpers. On the other end of the court, Kaylen Hines has totaled eight kills to lead the team, while Sierra Scanlan has earned 15 digs.
Scouting the Bulldogs
- The Bulldogs opened the season sweeping Samford and Troy, owning a 2-0 overall ledger.
- Tom Black, Georgia's head coach, is in his ninth season with the Bulldogs. He has tallied 375 career wins, including 133 wins at Georgia.
- Georgia has totaled 76 kills, led by Bianna Muoneke with 30. Kaiya Tyson leads the team with 51 assists and 16 digs, while Kendal Kemp surges the defense with 13 blocks.
