Simen Guttormsen's ACC title in the men's pole vault and senior
Max Forte's bronze medal in the men's long jump headlined another solid day of competition for Duke track and field at the ACC Outdoor Championships, which also saw the Blue Devils earn five more All-ACC honors and advance to their respective event final.
Through two days of competition, the Duke men remain in first place with 57 total points while the women are slotted seventh with 16 points.
TOP PERFORMANCES:
- Simen Guttormsen turned in the stoutest performance of the day for the Blue Devils with the graduate student parlaying a season-best performance into a first-place finish. After passing on the opening three heights, Guttormsen took on the ensuing four – three cleared on the first jump.
- The Ski, Norway product finished with a final clearance of 5.60m (18-4.5 feet) to secure the ACC crown, completing the ACC Championships season sweep in the men's pole vault.
- Senior Max Forte turned in an impressive performance in the men's long jump en route to earning the bronze medal and All-ACC First Team accolades. Forte opened the contest with a bang and delivered his best jump on the first attempt, flying out to 7.52m (24-8.25) to place third overall.
- Classmate Michael Bennett (men's decathlon) and freshman Valerie Jirak (women's heptathlon) wrapped up their respective multi-event showings with All-ACC Second Team honors.
- Jirak notched a fourth-place finish after posting a personal best of 5,542 points, with the rookie's performance headlined by runner-up finishes in the 200m and 800m. Bennett totaled 7,385 points, including a win in the 110m hurdles, en route to placing fifth.
- Junior Jonathan Horn also took part in the men's pole vault, placing sixth and earning All-ACC Second Team recognition after clearing a personal best of 5.21m (17-1 feet).
- Five more Blue Devils secured spots in their respective event finals following strong showings in the prelims. Graduate student Birgen Nelson was the first to punch her ticket and advance to Championship Saturday clocking 13.40 seconds in the 100m hurdles.
- The men's and women's 400m saw rookies Braelyn Baker (52.20) and Joseph Taylor (45.97) and junior Julia Jackson (53.03) secure their spot in the final. Baker and Taylor's times were both personal bests while checking in at No. 4 and No. 2, respectively, in program lore. Taking part in the 800m, junior Lauren Tolbert parlayed a time of 2:03.20 into an automatic bid to the event final.

Duke concludes competition at the ACC Outdoor Champions. Championship Saturday kicks off with the women's javelin at 11 a.m., while track events get going at 5:30 p.m., in the women's 4x100m relay.
