WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Five medals – one gold, one silver and three bronze – and six All-ACC accolades headlined a strong opening day of competition for Duke track and field at the 2025 ACC Outdoor Championships.
Christian Toro's ACC title in the men's hammer throw was the highlight performance for the Duke men, which also saw
Scott Campbell (javelin) and
Matthew Prebola (javelin) garner silver and bronze medals, respectively. On the women's side,
Allison Neiders and
Gemma Tutton led the charge with the duo securing bronze in the women's pole vault.
At the conclusion of day one, the Duke men sit in first place with 30 points while the women sit in fifth with 10 points.
TOP PERFORMANCES:
- Christian Toro delivered the standout performance of the day for the Blue Devils en route to the sophomore claiming the gold medal and All-ACC First Team accolades in the men's hammer throw.
- Stepping into the cage for his second attempt, Toro launched the hammer 68.35m (224-3 feet) to slot himself atop the field, with his mark more than a foot further than the event runner-up.
- Duke opened the morning with a commanding showing in the men's javelin as graduate students Scott Campbell and Joe DiDario and junior Matthew Prebola captured All-ACC honors.
- Campbell delivered his best throw of the competition on the sixth attempt, launching the javelin a season-best 67.75m (222-3 feet) to finish runner-up, while Prebola placed third courtesy of a 66.82m (219-3 feet) mark on his final throw. DiDario delivered his furthest throw – 64.67m (212-2 feet) – on the opening attempt, taking fourth and earning All-ACC Second Team honors.
- Junior Allison Neiders and sophomore Gemma Tutton reeled in the bronze medal and first-team all-conference status after finishing in a three-way tie in the women's pole vault with Virginia Tech's Julia Fixsen for third via a clearance of 4.32m (14-2 feet).
- Nieders cleared four of five bars on her initial jump, with the mark setting a personal best while vaulting her into No. 4 all-time on the Duke charts. Tutton passed on the opening two heights before clearing two of the ensuing three bars on the first jump.
- Several Blue Devils also punched their tickets to the finals in their respective events, starting with graduate student Aliya Garozzo in the 400m hurdles. Garozzo earned the automatic qualifier via a time 57.94 seconds – the fastest of her heat and No. 4 in the prelims overall.
- The men's and women's 200m prelims saw three athletes in freshmen Braelyn Baker and Joseph Taylor and senior Abby Geiser secure spots to Saturday's final with two of the berths coming via personal bests.
- Taylor unseated the four-year-old school record and slotted himself atop the program charts after notching a personal best of 20.69 seconds – second in his heat and third overall.
- Baker posted the fastest time of her career, her heat and the overall preliminary field, the rookie clocking 23.02 seconds while moving up one spot into No. 4 on the program charts. Geiser crossed the finish line in 23.56 seconds – good for her fastest time of the season.
- Graduate student Duncan Miller advanced to the men's 1500m final thanks to a time of 3:41.78.

Duke continues competition at the ACC Outdoor Championships with events resuming Friday with the second half of the men's decathlon (11 a.m.) and women's heptathlon (12:30). The women's long jump (3:30 p.m.) kicks off the afternoon slate of field events, while action on the track is slated to get going at 6 p.m., in the women's 100m hurdles.
