DURHAM, N.C. – No. 22 Duke (29-12, 10-5 ACC) completed the conference series sweep over North Carolina (29-12, 8-7 ACC) after claiming a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium. The Blue Devils outscored the Tar Heels 28-10 during the three-game set.
Redshirt sophomore
Kairi Rodriguez led the Blue Devils' offense in the series finale, batting 2-for-2 with one walk and one RBI. Senior
Ana Gold followed Rodriguez, finishing 1-for-2 at the plate with one RBI and one run.
Left-handed pitcher
Cassidy Curd earned her third win of the weekend after tossing the complete game shutout. The junior surrendered eight hits and three walks with a game-high five strikeouts in her 7.0 innings. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native moves her season ledger to 11-6 after 28 appearances in the circle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first two innings, Gold put Duke in front, 1-0, with a two-out single through the left side in the bottom of the third. Her knock brought in graduate student Thessa Malau'ulu from second after she reached on a base hit up the middle and advanced on a groundout.
- Rodriguez pushed the Blue Devils ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, sending an RBI-double down the left field line to score junior D'Auna Jennings.
- Junior KK Mathis plated Duke's third and final run in the fifth after slipping a base hit to left-center field to score Gold from second. Gold drew a one-out walk before moving up on a stolen base.
- The Blue Devils' defense held strong in the final two frames, allowing just two Tar Heels to move into scoring position, before grabbing the final outs and securing the shutout win.
NOTES
- Rodriguez tallied her 12th multi-hit game of the season.
- Gold remains perfect on the basepath with a team-high 12 stolen bases on the year.
- Curd has collected 115 strikeouts in her 109.1 innings this season. She now owns 430 career strikeouts to her name.
- Duke recorded its 12th shutout of the season, which ranks tied for ninth nationally.
- The Blue Devils shift the all-time series to a 14-5 advantage and have won 14 straight matchups against the Tar Heels.
