DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 19 Duke men's tennis team will face 15th-seeded Notre Dame in the second round of the ACC Championships Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Cary Tennis Park.
The Blue Devils earned a first-round bye and enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed. They concluded the regular season with a 16-7 overall record and a 9-4 mark in ACC matches.
ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORYÂ
Duke is seeking its 13th ACC Championship in program history and first since 2006. Last year at the conference tournament, the Blue Devils advanced to the semifinals, where they fell to first-seeded Virginia, 4-1.Â
The Blue Devils' first title came in 1982. Duke has also won the crown in four consecutive years from 1993-96 and again from 1998-2001.
RANKED NO. 19 AS A TEAMÂ
Duke was polled at No. 19 as a team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), as announced April 15. Throughout all dual-match season, the Blue Devils polled in the top-20, reaching as high as No. 7.Â
Nearly all men's tennis ACC schools appeared in the top-50Â ITAÂ rankings, including No. 1 Wake Forest, No. 5 NC State, No. 6 Virginia, No. 8 Stanford, No. 10 California, No. 17 Florida State, No. 22 Clemson, No. 37 Miami and No. 45 Georgia Tech.Â
Individually, junior Pedro Rodenas polled at No. 40, sophomore Cooper Williams sits at No. 62 and junior Sam Landau ranks No. 106.Â
Duke's doubles duo of Williams and graduate Theo Winegar poll at No. 20, Winegar and Rodenas rank No. 40 and Williams paired with graduate Andreja Petrovic sit at No. 72.Â
HOT STREAK
Williams is playing some of his best tennis this season, as he has posted five straight singles wins and owns a 13-5 record this dual match season. He earned an upset victory in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) at No. 24 Clemson against 58th-ranked Noa Vukadin. He also earned an upset triumph against 40th-ranked Jamie Connel in two sets (6-4, 6-4) in the No. 37 Florida State match.Â
Rodenas is also dangerous in singles play, as he has remained unbeaten for three straight matches and boasts a 10-4 ledger in dual matches this season. He earned an upset win against 10th-ranked Carl Emil Overbeck from No. 10 Cal in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-3). Rodenas also recently clinched the team triumph for Duke over North Carolina by posting a win at the first spot against Vladslav Melnic.Â
In doubles play, junior Gerard Planelles Ripoll paired with graduate Remy Dugardin have been dominant. They have won seven matches straight and remain unbeaten for 12.Â
LAST TIME OUTÂ
The Blue Devils closed out regular season match play with a 4-0 sweep over No. 48 North Carolina last Saturday. The Blue Devils earned the 1-0 lead, as Rodenas and Petrovic clinched a 6-4 triumph at the second spot and Dugardin and Ripoll earned the 7-5 victory on court three.
In singles matches, Williams earned a victory in straight sets (6-1, 6-1), and senior Connor Krug pushed Duke out to a 3-0 lead with a three-set win on court five (1-6, 6-0, 6-3). The match was decided when Rodenas earned a comeback three-set win at the first position (4-6, 6-4, 6-2).Â
