CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Following stellar performances at the Duke Invitational this past weekend, Duke track and field junior
Lauren Tolbert and sophomore
Christian Toro have been named the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Performers of the Week. Tolbert was tapped as the Women's Track Performer of the Week while Toro earned Men's Field Performer of the Week honors.
Tolbert went 2-for-2 at the meet, posting wins in the women's 400m and 800m events courtesy of record-setting performances. In a tightly-contested 800-meter race from the opening gun, Tolbert delivered some bell lap heroics en route to overtaking her adversary at the last second to claim the win, clocking 2:01.87. Her time, currently fifth in the nation and third in the ACC, was just 0.08 seconds from matching her own school record while shattering both the eight-year-old meet and four-year-old facility records in the process.
On Saturday, the junior spearheaded Duke's dominance in the 400m, parlaying a personal best of 51.83 seconds into her second event win in as many days. Tolbert's time – No. 10 in the NCAA and tops in the ACC – smashed both the four-year-old facility record and nine-year-old meet records while improving her own No. 3 Duke mark in the process.
Toro notched his third top-three placement and first win of the outdoor campaign, setting the tone for the weekend courtesy of a first-place finish in the men's hammer throw. The sophomore met the moment on his fifth throw of the competition, stepping into the cage and launching the hammer 70.13m (230-1 feet) to cement himself atop the competition field and No. 2 all-time at Duke. Toro's mark currently checks in at No. 8 nationally and No. 2 in the ACC.
Duke continues outdoor competition when it heads to the West Coast, making the trek to Torrance, California for the Mt. SAC Relays April 16-19.
