PITTSBURGH, Pa. – No. 20 Duke had its nine-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon, falling to Pitt, 5-3, in the second game of the weekend series at Vartabedian Field.
Redshirt sophomore
Kairi Rodriguez and junior
Aminah Vega led at the plate, batting 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively. Senior
Ana Gold drove in all three of Duke's runs with her lone hit on the night, a three-run shot in the top of the fifth inning.
Left-handed pitcher
Cassidy Curd tossed her eighth complete game of the season. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native was tagged with the loss after surrendering five runs off six hits. Despite the loss, Curd collected a game-high seven strikeouts. She moves her season ledger to 11-7 after 29 appearances in the circle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pitt's Kylie Griggs opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a leadoff home run to put the Panthers in front, 1-0.
- Curd settled back in to limit the Panthers to just one hit over the following three frames.
- In the bottom of the fourth, the Panthers used a three-run home run from Shelby Frazier and a solo shot off the bat of Amanda Ramierz to create a 5-0 gap.
- Gold cut the deficit to 5-3 in the top of the fifth, sending a three-run blast over the left field wall. Her long ball also brought in junior D'Auna Jennings and graduate student Thessa Malau'ulu, who reached on a base hit and a walk, respectively.
- Pitt attempted to spark its offense again in the bottom of the sixth, moving two into scoring position, but Curd sat down the following three batters on a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to end the threat.
- The Blue Devils were unable to complete the comeback in the top of the seventh, falling 5-3 in the end.
NOTES
- Gold sent out her ninth home run of the season and 47th of her career.
- She tallied her 11th multi-RBI game on the year and extended her hitting streak to a team-best 14 games.
- Rodriguez recorded her second career triple in the top of the fifth.
- Curd fanned seven during the contest and now owns 437 career strikeouts to her name.
