DURHAM, N.C. – No. 19 Duke fell to No. 9 Florida State, 12-4, in five innings in the conference series opener Friday night at Duke Softball Stadium.
Redshirt junior
Jada Baker led the offense, batting 2-for-2 on the night with a pair of RBIs. Senior
Ana Gold and junior
D'Auna Jennings each went 2-for-3 during the contest with one run scored.
Graduate student
Dani Drogemuller earned her 12th start of the season and tossed the first 4.0 innings. Junior
Sophie Garner-MacKinnon and freshman
Hailey Shuler also saw action in the circle against the Seminoles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Florida State opened the scoring in the top of the first, using a sacrifice fly and an RBI-single to left field to take a quick 2-0 lead.
- The Blue Devils answered immediately in the home half after junior KK Mathis reached on a fielding error that allowed Jennings to score from second.
- Baker put Duke in front, 3-2, with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second. Her long ball also brought in graduate student Thessa Malau'ulu, who reached on a base hit to right field.
- Sophomore Amiah Burgess extended the gap in the following frame with a triple to the left-center field wall to bring in Gold, who led off with a single to center field.
- Florida State regained the lead in the top of the fourth after Jaysoni Beachum sent a bases-clearing double to left-center field to make it a 5-4 game.
- The Seminoles' offense erupted again in the top of the fifth, plating seven additional runs off six hits and a Blue Devil error to put the game away, 12-4.
NOTES
- Baker sent out her second long ball of the season and seventh of her Blue Devil career.
- The Longwood, Fla., native recorded her first multi-RBI performance of the year.
- Garner-MacKinnon made her 10th appearance of the season, after entering the game in the top of the fifth and reached the 100-career innings pitched milestone.
- Drogemuller moves her season ledger to 8-4.
- Jennings extended her hitting streak to a team-best six games and tallied her eighth multi-hit outing of the season.
