PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Duke men's golf weathered high winds in the third round of The Hayt and posted the second-best round of the day, finishing in second place at 11-under, 853. The Blue Devils shot a 2-over, 290, in the final round and was one of just four teams to finish under-par for the tournament, joining the champion Texas (18-under), Alabama (6-under) and Virginia (1-under).Â
Luke Sample was the low Blue Devil in the third round and for the tournament, shooting a 2-under, 70, on Monday and finishing at 4-under, 212, for the tournament - good for a tie for sixth overall on the individual leaderboard. The second-place finish by Duke marks its third top-three finish in its last four events and is the fifth top-five finish for the team in seven possible events so far this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The third round began with a two-hour weather delay and once play began, high winds were prevalent throughout the entire round. Duke shot a 2-over, 290, as a team, the second-best round on the course, trailing only Texas' 6-under.Â
- Luke Sample signed for a 2-under, 70, on Monday. The senior got his scoring started with a birdie on No. 2, but played his next five holes at 4-over. Sample swapped a birdie on No. 8 for a bogey on No. 9 and made the turn to the back-nine at 3-over. After three pars to start the second half of his round, Sample caught fire over his final six holes, beginning with a birdie on the 463-yard, par-4, 13th, and capped with a birdie-birdie-eagle finish. The 5-under back-nine moved him to 2-under for the round and inside the top-10 on the individual leaderboard, where he finished in a tie for sixth at 4-under, 212.
- Ethan Evans also finished in red figures for Monday's round, shooting a 1-under, 71. The junior birdied the par-5 fourth but back-to-back bogeys sent Evans to the back-nine at 1-over. Evans sandwiched a single bogey, on No. 12, between birdies on No. 11 and 13 and closed with his fourth birdie of the day on the par-4 17th to end his day under-par. The junior ended the tournament at 4-over, 220, and tied for 37th overall.Â
- Kelly Chinn carded a 2-over, 74, in the final round. Chinn rolled in eight pars and two bogeys on the front-nine, before playing the back-nine at even-par, with two birdies, on No. 11 and 13, to offset two additional bogeys. The senior finished the event in a tie for 22nd at 2-over, 218.Â
- William Love and Bryan Kim rounded out Duke's lineup with a pair of 3-over, 75, rounds. Love ended his tournament in 10th place, at 3-under, 213, while Kim logged an even-par, 216, effort and tied for 16th.Â
