GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A five-run third inning led No. 12 Duke past Providence (0-7), 10-2, in the opening game before the Blue Devils defeated Binghamton, 4-0, in day two of the Bubly Invitational. With the wins, Duke improves to 6-3 on the year.
Freshman
Hailey Shuler earned her first career start and win against the Friars. The Lake Balboa, Calif., native tossed all 5.0 innings, surrendering two runs off three hits with four strikeouts. Juniors
Sophie Garner-MacKinnon and
Cassidy Curd combined to shut out Binghamton in the nightcap. Garner-MacKinnon picked up the win after allowing just five Bearcats to reach base on three hits and two walks. Curd fanned five in her 2.0 innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. PROVIDENCE
- D'Auna Jennings sparked the Blue Devil offense right away with a leadoff single to left. The junior moved to second on a stolen base, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out from senior Ana Gold to put Duke in front, 1-0.
- Jennings pushed the Blue Devils ahead, 2-0, in the following frame with an RBI-single up the middle to score sophomore Linh Le, who reached on a walk.
- Duke continued its momentum on offense with a five-run third inning, highlighted by Le's two-run shot to left field, to stretch a 7-0 lead.
- Providence added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to avoid the shutout and cut into the Blue Devils' gap, 7-2.
- Gold sent out a three-run blast in the top of the fifth to round out Duke's 10 runs and seal the run-rule victory over the Friars.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. BINGHAMTON
- After a scoreless opening two frames, Duke used a two-out rally in the bottom of the third to take the lead, 3-0.
- The Blue Devils were limited to just one hit over the following two innings before freshman Brooklinn Thomas was able to extend the Blue Devils' edge in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to right to score Gold. Gold opened the sixth with a walk before advancing on a base hit and stolen base.
- Curd quickly put away two outs in the top of the seventh with back-to-back strikeouts before junior Aminah Vega grabbed the final out at second to claim the win, 4-0.
NOTES
- Sophomore Dakota Farmer made her Blue Devil debut against the Friars, entering the game as the catcher in the bottom of the third.
- Le's two-run home run marked the first long ball of her career.
- Gold tallied her 39th career home run during the opening game.
