GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 12 Duke (4-3) split a pair of games on day one of the Bubly Invitational, rolling past Boston College (4-4), 9-1, in the opening game before falling to No. 2 Florida (11-0), 9-0, in the nightcap.
Junior
KK Mathis and redshirt sophomore
Kairi Rodriguez powered the offense, each batting 3-for-5 on the night while accounting for six of Duke's nine runs.
Graduate student
Dani Drogemuller earned the start and the win against the Eagles. The Frankfort, Ill., native allowed just one run off four hits with six strikeouts in her 5.0 innings of work. She made her second appearance of the night against the Gators and shared the circle with juniors
Cassidy Curd and
Sophie Garner-MacKinnon. Curd was ultimately pinned with the loss after tossing the first 3.0 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. BOSTON COLLEGE
- Junior Aminah Vega was quick to open the scoring for the Blue Devils in the bottom of the first, reaching on an infield single before advancing on an Eagles throwing error to score classmate D'Auna Jennings and senior Ana Gold. Two batters later, Mathis added another run with a base hit to right field to bring in Rodriguez and put Duke ahead, 3-0.
- Boston College plated its lone run in the top of the third using an RBI-single from Hannah Slike to make it a 3-1 game.
- Duke added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third after back-to-back RBI-doubles from Vega and Rodriguez to pull ahead again, 5-1.
- The Blue Devil offense did not let up as they tacked on four additional runs off two hits and two errors in the following frame to create a 9-1 gap between the teams.
- In the top of the fifth, Drogemuller sat down the final three batters in order to secure the run-rule victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. NO. 2 FLORIDA
- Florida's Taylor Shumaker sent out a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to open the scoring in the nightcap.
- The Gators kept their bats hot in bottom of the third, adding three runs off five hits to stretch a 4-0 lead. The Blue Devils were able to grab the remaining two outs and leave two Florida baserunners stranded.
- Rodriguez broke through in the top of the fourth with a two-out base hit to right field for Duke's first hit of the night.
- Florida's offense exploded again in the home half with five additional runs to stretch the lead to 9-0.
- Mathis attempted to spark the Blue Devil offense in the top of the fifth with a leadoff single but was left stranded as Florida quickly put the final three outs away.
NOTES
- Drogemuller threw the 28th complete game of her career and improves to 2-1 on the year.
- The Blue Devils move to 11-0 all-time against the Eagles.
- Curd picked up her first loss after four appearances in the circle and moves her ledger to 2-1.
- Duke is now 2-1 in run-rule games this season.

Duke faces Providence and Binghamton on the second day of action in the Bubly Invitational. First pitch with the Friars is set for 4:30 p.m., while the Blue Devils battle the Bearcats at 7 p.m.
