DURHAM β Duke field hockey head coach
Pam Bustin became the all-time wins leader in program history as the fifth-ranked Blue Devils cruised to a 5-0 season-opening victory over William & Mary Friday evening.
The Blue Devils broke open a 1-0 lead with a pair of goals in a five-minute span in the second quarter. Duke got goals from four different players, including
Kyle Massey notching her first career goal.
Alaina McVeigh picked up right where she left off last season with two goals, while
Brynn Crouse and
Logan Clouser rounded out the scorers. Β
How it Happened
- After waiting for nearly four hours to open the 2024 season, the Blue Devils got off on the front foot, earning four penalty corners in the opening 15 minutes.
- The fourth penalty corner proved to be the difference as McVeigh's hit from the top of the circle slid through the Tribe defense and past William & Mary's goaltender for the 1-0 Duke lead. Barb Civitella provided the insert and Kira Curland was the stopper for the goal.
- Duke dominated possession and gave the Tribe fits with its pressure in the first 15 minutes. The Blue Devils finished the first quarter with nine shots and held the Tribe without a look on goal.
- Eight minutes into the second quarter, Crouse doubled the Blue Devil lead with her sixth career goal. Five minutes later, Massey followed up a shot from McVeigh and pushed the rebound into the cage to send Duke into the locker room with a 3-0 lead.
- McVeigh turned in a great individual effort midway through the third quarter, slicing her way through the William & Mary defense into the circle for her 19th career score. Clouser capped the evening, finishing a pass from Curland.
- Defensively, Duke was outstanding. The Blue Devils held William & Mary to two penalty corners and no shots over the four quarters. Duke outshot the Tribe 28-0 and had a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners.
- Graduate student transfer Frederique Wollaert earned the start in goal for the Blue Devils while freshman Kaiya Chepow played the second half.
- Maddie George had 10 saves in 60 minutes of action for William & Mary.
