DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Athletics is proud to announce the naming of the Greg Dale Leadership Program (GDLP) in 2023-24.
The GDLP was named in honor of the late Dr. Greg Dale who served Duke Athletics as its first Sports Psychologist and as a Professor of Sports Psychology and Sports Ethics. Originally, the Duke Athletics Leadership Program was created in 2006 as a first of its kind in college athletics by Dale and Professor Scott Yakola with the mission to proactively develop and enhance the leadership skills of Duke student-athletes, coaches and athletic department administrators. Each year hundreds of student-athletes, coaches and administrators participate through various program elements designed to assist those involved to grow as leaders.

Along with the formal naming of the GDLP, additional workshops for sophomores and juniors along with a celebration dinner this past spring were added. The GDLP will continue to expand upon the foundational programs ACTION, LEAD and Captains already in place.
Components of the program are outlined below:
ACTION -- An introductory program for first-year student-athletes focused on essential leadership qualities such as accountability, commitment, and integrity, setting the stage for their college and athletic careers.
Engaging Leaders -- Sophomores take a deeper dive into their roles within teams, enhancing their leadership skills and starting to make significant impacts.
Emerging Leaders -- Juniors build upon their skills by learning to bridge team divisions and effectively use their voices to lead.
Captains -- Seniors prepare to take on formal leadership roles, enhancing their influence within the team and across the broader athletic community.
End of the Year Celebration Dinner
The GDLP concluded the 2023-24 calendar year by hosting an inaugural dinner and panel that included guest speakers Duke Vice President and Director of Athletics Nina King, former Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence and former Duke women's basketball student-athlete Sue Gordon and CEO Duke University Health System Dr. Craig Albanese.
