DURHAM, N.C. – The 20th-ranked Duke men's soccer team hosts the final exhibition match on Friday, Aug. 16 at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils welcome 16th-ranked Georgetown to the pitch with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
Admission to all men's soccer exhibitions is free and concessions will not be available for the match. Parking will be in the Science Drive Garage and will open two hours before each match.
MATCHUP NOTES
- The Blue Devils and Hoyas meet for the second consecutive season in the preseason, as the two sides tied in 2023 at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C., 2-2.
- The two sides are knotted up at 2-2-0 all-time in the regular season, with the Hoyas winning the last matchup in 2018, 1-0.
- Friday marks the final exhibition this preseason for the Blue Devils, before preparing for opening weekend in San Diego, California.
BY THE NUMBERS
14 – The Blue Devils welcome 14 newcomers to the 2024 roster, including eight transfers and six freshmen.
10 – Duke has won 10-plus contests in 10 of the 16 completed seasons under Kerr.
3 – The Atlantic Coast Conference added three new teams this season, as California, Stanford, and SMU joined the league. The Blue Devils will face two of those three, traveling to Stanford and hosting SMU in 2024.
FIRST TOUCH
- Duke's offensive production showed in Tuesday's exhibition victory over UNC Asheville. The Blue Devils produced seven goals, including four in the first half.
- Three Blue Devils were named captains for the 2024 season, as Kamran Acito, Luke Thomas, and Ruben Mesalles don the armbands this season.
- Graduate student Adam Luckhurst tallied two goals in Tuesday's contest against UNC Asheville, playing 50 minutes and registering six shots.
ALL-ACC PRESEASON PLAYER TO WATCH
- Senior midfielder Ruben Mesalles was named to the 2024 Preseason All-ACC Watch List, following a vote by the ACC men's soccer coaches on Wednesday.
- Mesalles, a native of Sarasota, Florida, started 17 of the 18 games he appeared in last season for the Blue Devils. In those fixtures, he tallied a career-best four goals and four assists to produce a career-high 12 points. Mesalles finished the season with 1,340 total minutes, playing 90 minutes in three consecutive games.
- The conference also announced the preseason coaches' poll on Wednesday, with Duke picked to finish seventh in the league. The Blue Devils garnered 122 total votes, while Clemson received 193 votes as the favorite in the league.
UNITED SOCCER COACHES GOALKEEPER TO WATCH
- Graduate student Wessel Speel was tabbed to the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Goalkeepers to Watch List last week, one of six in the country named to the award.
- Speel, a 6-foot-7 goalkeeper from Hofstra, has enjoyed an illustrious career before his arrival in Durham. The Utrecht, Netherlands, native has started all 75 games he has appeared in, collecting 25 shutouts and posting a goals-against average of 0.97 during his time. He has tallied 227 saves and posted a 51-11-13 record.
