DURHAM - Duke fencers Christina Ferrari, Stephen Kim, Allen Marakov and David Tierney have been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) 2024 Academic All-District Men's and Women's At-Large teams, the organization announced.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in July.Â
Ferrari earns the award for the third consecutive year while Kim collects the accolade for the second time.Â
Ferrari posted another standout performance as a senior this winter and finished the year with her third All-America honor. She became the first three-time All-America honoree in Duke women's foil history and just the third Duke women's fencer to win the honor at least three times.Â
She collected a silver medal during the individual portion of the ACC Championship and went 37-16 during the regular season. As a two-time co-captain, she helped guide the women's foil squad to a 27-6 regular-season ledger and helped defeat a host of ranked Division I opponents throughout the regular season. Ferrari closes out her Duke career as a three-time All-American, the two-time ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, ACC silver and bronze medalist to go along with a number of academic honors.Â
Kim played to a 45-24 overall ledger during his senior year and helped the men's saber team finish 18-8 in the regular season. Over the course of his career, he has earned All-America accolades twice (2021, 2023) and was named ACC Fencer of the Year for his efforts in 2023. He has qualified for the NCAA Championships twice and earned a gold medal during the individual portion of the ACC Championship in 2021. He has excelled in the classroom with numerous academic accomplishments, as well.Â
Marakov captured his first All-America honor of his career with a tied-for-third-place finish in men's epee at the NCAA Championship. His bronze finish was the best of a Duke men's epee player since 2014. He played to a 34-27 regular-season record and earned a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional. He placed seventh during the individual portion of the ACC Championship and is named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the second time in his career as a junior.Â
Tierney has helped the Duke men's fencing team see great success the last four years and has compiled 74 wins during his time as a Blue Devil. He has qualified for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional three times and owns three top-10 finishes at the ACC Championships. In 2022, he captured a bronze medal during the individual competition and this season, he was second on the men's foil team in wins. Additionally, he has earned multiple academic awards during his four years.Â
