DURHAM – Duke women's soccer features 12 former Blue Devils competing in the professional ranks across the world. Seven are playing in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), while five are overseas. See below how the Duke standouts are performing on the pitch.
NWSL
Ella Stevens - #13 NY/NJ Gotham FC (NWSL)
Since joining NJ/NY Gotham FC, in January, Ella Stevens has been tearing it up on the field. The forward has played in nine out of 11 matches so far this season and started in five of her last six appearances. Stevens' contributions have been key to the team's success. She's been on fire as of late, scoring four goals over the last four games. She scored both
goals for the team and played 86 minutes in Gotham's recent 2-0 victory against Bay FC. On May 19, she also netted the
game-winning goal against her former club, the Chicago Red Stars, securing a 2-1 win for Gotham FC. Stevens played a crucial role as well in Gotham's April 28 match against Racing Louisville FC,
assisting on the game-tying goal. Additionally, Stevens has been effective on the defensive end, recording seven tackles and two interceptions so far this season. NY/NJ Gotham FC is having a strong season, sitting in fifth place with a 6-2-3 record. Stevens looks forward to continuing her outstanding season with Gotham as it gets ready to take on Racing Louisville FC on June 15 at 12:00 p.m.
Quinn - #5 Seattle Reign FC (NWSL)
Seattle Reign has felt the absence of Quinn's defensive presence on the field. Quinn has been sidelined with a knee injury since Reign FC's April 27 match against NC Courage. Prior to the injury, Quinn was demonstrating their defensive ability, recording five tackles and one interception. They appeared in all five of Seattle Reign's matches before April 27, starting in three of them. Seattle Reign is eager to get Quinn back in the lineup. If they are able to recover in time, Quinn has the chance to represent Canada in the Olympics. Seattle Reign's next game is Sunday June 16, at 4:00 p.m. against the Portland Thorns.
Lily Nabet - #28 Angel City FC (NWSL)
Lily Nabet has appeared in seven matches so far this season, starting in five of them. The 24-year-old has proven to be effective on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Nabet is a talented passer, with an impressive passing accuracy of 80 percent this season. On the defensive end, she has been strong as well, racking up five tackles, five interceptions and winning 13 headed duels in just seven games played. Two of her tackles and one interception came in Angel City's most recent match against Gotham on June 8. Angel City FC is eager to improve its 3-6-2 record and is gearing up for its next match against the Houston Dash June 15, at 9:30 p.m.
Tess Boade - #12 Bay FC (NWSL)
Tess Boade has proven to be a crucial contributor to her new club, Bay FC, this season. The 25-year-old forward has played in all 12 matches for the club, starting in all but one. Boade has played the full 90 minutes in eight of those matches as well. Offensively, she has made a significant impact, scoring
two goals and maintaining an impressive 84 percent passing accuracy, showcasing her skills as a talented passer and playmaker. Additionally, Boade delivered an
assist to the lone goal in Bay FC's 1-0 win against Angel City on March 17. She has made notable efforts on the defensive side of the ball as well with 19 tackles and eight interceptions so far this year. The former Duke standout looks forward to assisting her team in their next match Sunday, June 16, against Utah Royals FC at 10:00 p.m.
Michelle Cooper - #17 Kansas City Current (NWSL)
The 2022 Hermann Trophy winner is in her second year with Kansas City Current. Cooper was injured to start the season, but has put up impressive numbers since her return. Since recovering, she has appeared in nine matches, starting in four of them. In Kansas City's 5-2 win against Seattle June 9, Cooper played the full 90 minutes and recorded her
first assist of the season. She recently scored her
first goal of the season as well in the Current's 3-3 draw against Racing Louisville FC May 18. On the defensive end, Cooper has recorded five tackles, two interceptions and a striking 11 headed duels won. Kansas City Current is having an outstanding season so far, sitting in first place with a 8-0-4 record. Their next match is on Friday June 14 at 8:00 p.m. against the Chicago Red Stars.
Sophie Jones - #16 Chicago Red Stars (NWSL)
Sophie Jones is living out her dream of playing professional soccer as she continues her second season on the Chicago Red Stars. While she has yet to play in a regular season game in 2024, Jones has been loving her time with the Red Stars, with everything from the practices to the standards and goals the club sets for their players. During her time at Duke, Jones was a two-time All-American and currently ranks fifth in starts on the Duke record books. Chicago is currently in sixth place with a record of 5-6-1 and looks forward to its next game Friday, Jun 14 and 8:00 p.m. against Kansas City Current.
Imani Dorsey - #28 Utah Royals FC (NWSL)
The Utah Royals' backline is missing Imani Dorsey. Unfortunately, Dorsey suffered a ruptured achilles in the Royals' March 22 win against NC courage. The 28-year-old defender has been placed on the season-ending injury list, but is working hard to heal. Since sustaining the injury, she underwent a successful surgery and has been rehabbing with the Utah Royals medical team. Dorsey was a key member of the backline before her injury. Playing in only two games, she recorded two starts, 134 minutes, and five headed duels won. The Utah Royals next play Sunday June 16 at 10:00 p.m. against Bay FC.
Overseas
Mia Gyau - #3 Stade de Reims
Mia Gyau just finished her first season with Stade de Reims in France. The 25-year-old right-back played 10 matches with the club, starting in nine of them. During the 2023-24 season, she recorded an impressive 30 tackles won, seven interceptions, and seven shot blocks. Stade de Reims did well in the Division 1 Feminine this year, making it to the third-place match in the playoffs where they lost in penalty kicks to Paris FC. They ended the season in third place with a 10-5-7 record.
Caitlin Cosme - #16 UF Stjarnan
Caitlin Cosme has made a notable debut in her first season with UF Stjarnan, a club based in Garðabær, Iceland. The defender has appeared in five of the six matches so far this season, starting and playing the full 90 in all five matches. Not only has Cosme been a key part of the backline, she also scored two goals so far this season. The team currently has a 3-3 record and is looking to improve their standing. Their next match is on Saturday, June 15 against Þór/KA Akureyri. Cosme was team captain her senior year with the Blue Devils and a 2021 All-American.
Kayla (McCoy) Mckenna - #12 Villarreal CF
Kayla McKenna is enjoying her time with Villarreal CF. She has played 30 matches so far for Villareal, averaging 82 minutes per appearance. She has an outstanding 11 goals and two assists, and is the club's top goal scorer for the 2023-24 season. Villarreal CF has won its last two matches and is eagerly anticipating its next match against Atletico on Saturday, June 15. Mckenna has also competed with the Jamaican women's national team since 2019. She had a notable career with the Blue Devils as well, playing a total of 57 matches and scoring 30 goals during her time at Duke.
Toni Payne - #11 Sevilla FC
Toni Payne has been playing forward for Sevilla FC since 2018. This season, she has lit up the pitch, playing in 29 games, with 23 starts, while racking up
six goals and four assists. Sevilla is sitting in seventh place in Liga F with a 13-11-5 record. While born in the U.S., Payne proudly represents Nigeria's national team, her parents' home country. She is set to take her talents to the global stage, representing Nigeria in the Paris Olympics this year. Payne's stellar performances helped Nigeria qualify for the Olympics for the first time since 2008.
Natasha Anasi - #3 SK Brann
Natasha Anasi has had a notable career playing in Europe. She is currently playing for SK Brann in Bergen, Norway. This season she has appeared in five matches, where she has recorded
one goal and an impressive eight tackles and 16 balls recovered. She has also shown her talents as a passer with a 74 percent accurate passing rate this season. Anasi had an outstanding career playing defense for Duke. She was the first Duke player to be a finalist for the Hermann Trophy in 2011, as well as the second player to be a two-time NSCAA All-America.
