DURHAM – Duke senior attackman
Brennan O'Neill has been selected as one of five finalists for the 2024 Tewaaraton Award presented by Stiffel as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Thursday afternoon. The award is presented annually to the nation's top men and women's lacrosse players.
The reigning Tewaaraton Award winner, O'Neill is the fifth Duke player to be selected as a finalist in multiple years, joining
Kevin Cassese (2001, 2002),
Matt Danowski (2005, 2007, 2008),
Zack Greer (2008, 2009) and
Ned Crotty (2009, 2010).
Duke's leader at attack, O'Neill leads the offense with 49 goals and 25 assists for 74 points. He has nine hat tricks and nine five-plus point games for the nation's fifth-ranked scoring offense. A consensus first-team All-America pick in 2023, O'Neill has at least one goal in every game this season and has the nation's second-longest goal scoring streak at 45 games.
Equally as adept at passing as scoring, O'Neill ranks second on the team in assists and has 98 for his career. O'Neill, just the second player in Duke history to earn All-ACC honors four times, is on track to become just the eighth Blue Devil to record 100 career assists and just the fourth in NCAA Division I history to have 200 career goals and 100 assists.
Over his four seasons with the Blue Devils, the Bay Shore, N.Y., native has collected nearly every award possible. In 2023, he won both the Tewaaraton Award and the USILA Raymond J. Enners Most Outstanding Player award – just the second Blue Devil to win both of those awards in his career. His success continued to the international stage last summer as he led the U.S. Men's National Team to the 2023 World Lacrosse Championship gold medal. He was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after scoring five goals in the championship game against Canada.
Playing in 69 career games, O'Neill has 202 goals and 98 assists for 300 points. He is the 22nd player in Division I history to record 300 career points and ranks fourth in Duke history. He is five points away from passing
Jordan Wolf on the Duke career points list and five goals from taking over the second spot from
Zack Greer on the career goals list. He currently ranks third among active players in career points and second in goals.
The second-seeded Blue Devils (12-5) open NCAA Tournament action Saturday, May 11 against Utah. Faceoff is set for 2:30 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPNU.
