COLUMBIA, Mo. – Tenth-seeded Duke fell, 3-1, to seventh-seeded Missouri in game two of the NCAA Super Regional on Saturday at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
The Blue Devils were limited to just two hits on the day from senior
Francesca Frelick and sophomore
D'Auna Jennings, finishing 1-for-3 and 1-for-2, respectively. Frelick also accounted for Duke's lone run with a solo home run out of left field.
Senior
Jala Wright was tagged with just her second loss of the season, surrendering three runs, two earned, on three hits in 3.1 innings of work. The Charlotte, N.C., native also tallied two strikeouts during the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first three frames were a pitcher's duel between Wright and Missouri's Laurin Krings as the pair did not allow a baserunner to reach until the top of the fourth on an infield single.
- Missouri generated a one-out rally in the top of the fourth, connecting on three straight singles and a Blue Devil error to take a 3-0 lead.
- Frelick cut the deficit to two runs with a solo blast over the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth.
- The Blue Devils sparked their offense again in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases on a pair of walks and a fielding error, but the Tigers were able to record the final two outs of the frame to escape the threat and ultimately hold on for the 3-1 win.
NOTES
- Frelick blasted her second home run of the weekend and seventh long ball on the year.
- Wright moves her season ledger to 19-2 on the year.
- Sophomore Cassidy Curd made her 29th appearance in the circle, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings with one hit and one strikeout.
QUOTES
- "Obviously a really tough heartbreaker today, not the outcome we were looking for, but I feel like we played well. We hit a lot of balls hard right at people. We continued to have opportunities up until the sixth inning to come back and we've just got to fight, rebound from this and come back tomorrow to play our game." – Head coach Marissa Young
- "If I have a home run approach, I'll probably strike out every at bat. My goal is just to hit the ball hard and just keep it simple, really shortening my swing and the home run will come if I see a good pitch." - Senior Francesca Frelick on her second home run of the weekend
- "We've had to face adversity all year. This is just another game. We've been here before, this really reminds me of the Florida State series when we had to come back in the third game, so I'm not worried about it. There's a lot to learn from today and there was a lot to learn from yesterday, if we just connect the puzzle pieces, we'll be fine." -Sophomore D'Auna Jennings on the mindset going into game three
