HIGH POINT, N.C. – Junior
Samantha Wallenstrom smashed the VertKlasse Meeting meet record in the women's 800m and the Blue Devils registered five event wins on Saturday to close out a strong weekend of competition for Duke track and field.
Along with the five victories, Duke posted nine additional top-three placements on the day – four runner-up showings and five third-place finishes.
TOP PERFORMANCES
- Samantha Wallenstrom provided the stoutest performance of the day for Duke en route to the junior dismounting the 11-year-old VertKlasse Meeting record in the women's 800m.
- Wallenstrom beat the previous record by almost two seconds as she clocked 2:08.68 – two seconds faster than the event's runner-up.
- Graduate student Tia Rozario picked up her first win and third top-five placement of the outdoor campaign via a season-best performance in the women's triple jump.
- Rozario delivered her furthest jump on the sixth and final attempt of the competition, flying out to 13.05m (42-9.75 feet) to slot herself atop the field of 31 – a mark nearly two feet more than the runner-up.
- Mia Edim got the Duke track events going Saturday in the women's 100m (participate) with the rookie grabbing the first event win of the day for the Blue Devils. Edim produced her best showing of the season, clocking 11.83 seconds to slot herself atop the 71-person field.
- The women's 200m (participate) saw graduate student Skyla Wilson reel in her third event win of the outdoor season as she logged the quickest time of 108-person field via a dash of 23.93 seconds.
- Duke's fifth dub of the day occurred in the women's 4x100m relay where the Blue Devils' quartet of junior Megan McGinnis, Edim, graduate student Maddy Doane and junior Abby Geiser raced to a finish of 45.86 seconds to claim the victory.
- Classmate Beau Allen tallied his second consecutive runner-up placement in the men's high jump while concluding the event as the top collegiate finisher in group 'A'.
- Allen passed on the first two heights then cleared the next two on his opening attempt, before bowing out with a final clearance of 2.10m (6-10.75 feet) for the second-place finish.
- Edim collected her second top-three placement of the day – this one behind a strong performance in the women's 200m (participate). She finished her race in 24.08 seconds, marking a new personal best in the event.
- Doane and Wilson notched their second top-three marks of the day by way of runner-up finishes in the women's 200m and 100m hurdles, respectively.
- Wilson matched her personal best and No. 5 all-time program of 13.35 seconds while Doane turned in a time of 24.11 seconds.
- Behind a season-best performance, Addie Renner notched a top-three placement in the women's high jump group 'A'.
- Passing on the first three heights, Renner cleared the fourth bar on her first attempt then the fifth and sixth bars, respectively, on the second jump. The graduate student finished with at a final height of 1.72m (5-7.75 feet) – good for third place.
- The foursome of freshman Jill Roberts, graduate student Alejandro Rodriguez, junior Meredith Sims and senior Jackson Walker rounded out Duke's top performances of day with everyone placing third in their respective events.
- Roberts and Walker tallied career-best times en route to their top-three finishes with Roberts running in 14.61 seconds in the 100m hurdles (participate) while Walker delivered a time of 50.17 seconds in the men's 400m (participate).
- Sims competed in the women's 400m hurdles and clocked 1:02.02 with Rodriguez rounding out the group with a finish of 48.25 seconds in the men's 400m.
