DURHAM – Fifth-ranked Duke softball shut out Longwood, 6-0, Wednesday night at Duke Softball Stadium to conclude its regular season home slate.
Senior
Jala Wright and sophomore
Sophie Garner-MacKinnon combined in the circle to limit the Lancers to just one hit on the night. Wright earned the win after working the first 4.0 innings, surrendering the lone hit while recording eight strikeouts. Garner-MacKinnon fanned four in her 3.0 innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Longwood was quick to load the bases in the opening frame using a lead-off single and a pair of walks before Wright settled in to fan the next three batters and hold off the Lancers' offense.
- Sophomore D'Auna Jennings put the Blue Devils in front with an RBI-single in the bottom of the second to score freshman Amiah Burgess, who reached on a bunt before moving up on a stolen base.
- Duke extended its lead to 2-0 in the third inning with an RBI-double off the bat of sophomore Aminah Vega. Her knock brought in senior Kelly Torres after she reached on a base hit to left field.
- Junior Ana Gold blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to create a 4-0 gap between the teams.
- The senior duo of Francesca Frelick and Torres sparked the offense again late in the sixth inning, driving in two additional runs with a double and triple, respectively, to round out the scoring.
NOTES
- Duke's 18 shutouts on the year sit tied for third nationally with Florida. The pair trail only Oklahoma and Boston U., who lead the nation with 22.
- The Blue Devils now lead the all-time series with Longwood, 4-3.
- Wright improves to 15-1 on the season after 24 appearances in the circle.
- Torres finished 3-for-4 on the night and extended her hitting streak to a team-high 12 games.
- Gold tallied her eighth multi-RBI game of the season.
