DURHAM – Three home runs in the bottom of the third inning helped guide No. 5 Duke to a 14-1 victory over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night at Duke Softball Stadium.
With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 40-6 overall and have now registered 40-plus wins in four straight seasons. Gardner-Webb drops to 30-19 overall on the year.
Freshman
Amiah Burgess and sophomore
D'Auna Jennings led the offense, both finishing 3-for-3 at the plate. The duo also combined to drive in seven of Duke's 14 runs on the night.
Sophomore
Cassidy Curd and graduate student
Dani Drogemuller split the circle against the Runnin' Bulldogs. Curd earned the start, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and recording two strikeouts. Drogemuller picked up the win after 3.0 innings of relief, surrendering one run off four hits and fanning three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Devils came out firing, scoring six runs off six hits and an error in the opening frame to jump ahead, 6-0.
- Jennings extended Duke's advantage to 8-0 with a two-RBI single to left center field in the bottom of the second. Her knock scored Burgess and graduate student Gisele Tapia, who reached on a single and walk, respectively.
- Duke kept its offense rolling in the third inning, adding in six runs off three long balls, each two-run blasts from Burgess, junior Kelsey Zampa and redshirt-sophomore Jada Baker to stretch a 14-0 gap.
- Gardner-Webb pushed its lone run across the plate in the top of the fourth after connecting on back-to-back doubles.
- The Runnin' Bulldogs tried to spark their offense in the final frame, loading the bases on two outs, but Drogemuller struck out the final batter to seal the run-rule victory, 14-1.
NOTES
- Tapia went 1-for-1 on the night and reached the 200-career hit milestone with an RBI-single up the middle in the opening frame.
- Freshman Linh Le recorded the first hit of her collegiate career with a single to center field.
- The Blue Devils earned their 12th run-rule victory of the season and have outscored their opponents, 153-13, in those games.
- Zampa, Burgess and Baker blasted the second, third and fifth home runs of their careers, respectively.
