DURHAM – Duke senior
Brennan O'Neill and graduate students
Kenny Brower and
Josh Zawada have been selected as nominees for the 2024 Tewaaraton Award, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Thursday afternoon.
The Blue Devils lead the way with three nominees while five other programs have two players represented on the 25-player list. O'Neill is the reigning Tewaaraton Award winner, taking home the trophy in 2023. Overall, 18 different schools are represented.
The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are composed of premier college coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation. Five men's and five women's finalists will be selected from these groups, to be announced May 9 at the conclusion of the regular season.
"The Tewaaraton Nominees are a truly exceptional group of student-athletes," said Andy Phillips, President of the Tewaaraton Foundation. "Their outstanding play has created so many memorable moments and exciting games in 2024, and we fully expect to see more of the same as we head toward the postseason."
Duke's leader at attack, O'Neill leads the offense with 42 goals and 22 assists for 64 points. He has eight hat tricks and eight five-plus point games this year to help the Blue Devils to the No. 2 national ranking. A consensus first-team All-America pick in 2023, O'Neill has at least one goal in every game this season and has registered at least three points 11 times. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native scored a season-high six goals in a commanding win over Saint Joseph's and tallied five markers a week later against Jacksonville to earn the ACC Offensive Player of the Week award. He is riding a 42-game goal streak, scoring 132 goals in that stretch.
Playing in 67 career games, O'Neill has 195 goals and 95 assists to his name to rank fourth at Duke with 290 points. He is five goals shy of becoming the third Blue Devil to 200 goals and five helpers shy of becoming the eighth player in Duke history to hit the century mark. He currently ranks third among active players in career points and second in goals.
Brower is the anchor to Duke's defense. A starter in every game of his career, Brower recently was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week after a stellar performance in the Blue Devils' 18-12 win over Virginia. He registered a career-high four caused turnovers while holding the Cavaliers to their lowest scoring game of the season and second worst shooting performance.
A 2023 first-team All-American, Brower leads the Blue Devils with 18 caused turnovers while drawing the matchup with the opponent's top attackman in every game. He has forced multiple turnovers in six games this season and corralled 22 ground balls. Playing in 75 career games, Brower ranks fourth in Duke history with 72 caused turnovers.
Joining the Blue Devils as a graduate student transfer after a standout career at Michigan, Zawada has not missed a beat since stepping foot in Durham. He leads Duke and ranks fourth in the ACC with 34 assists (2.43/gm) and has 60 points overall. He has dished out three-plus assists in five games this year and registered five-plus points seven times. The Raleigh, N.C., native most recently was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week following his five-goal outing against Virginia.
Zawada, Michigan's all-time leading goal and point scorer, has 145 goals and 128 assists for 273 points in his 65 career games. He ranks fourth among active players in points, fifth in assists and 11th in points. He has 24 career hat tricks and 25 outings with at least five points.
The second-ranked Blue Devils (11-3) have a bye this weekend before they cap the regular season at North Carolina April 27. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m., at Dorrance Field.
