CLEMSON, S.C. – Third-ranked Duke softball defeated No. 19 Clemson, 6-1, on Sunday night to complete the three-game sweep and the program's third consecutive ACC series sweep.
Additionally with the win, head coach
Marissa Young earned her 250th career victory and improves to 250-101 (.712) while at the helm of the Blue Devil program.
The Blue Devils (37-4, 16-2 ACC) handed the Tigers (28-14, 11-7 ACC) their first conference series sweep at home since Florida State on April 6-7, 2023.
Sophomore
Cassidy Curd earned the start and the win, tossing 4.0 scoreless inning, surrendering just three hits, while recording a game-high six strikeouts. Senior
Jala Wright picked up the save after working 3.0 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first four frames became a pitcher's duel between Curd and Clemson's Regan Spencer with both sides allowing just five baserunners to reach on a combined four hits and one walk.
- Senior Kelly Torres finally broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth with an RBI-single to score sophomore Aleyah Terrell, who was pinch running for graduate student Gisele Tapia after a lead-off walk.
- During the ensuing at bat, senior Claire Davidson brought home an additional run with a base hit to center field to score sophomore D'Auna Jennings from second and extend Duke's edge to 2-0.
- Clemson cut the Blue Devils' advantage in half in the bottom of the sixth after connecting on a pair of singles to push what would be its lone run across home plate.
- Duke quickly responded in the top of the seventh with a four-run frame to create a 6-1 gap between the teams. The multi-run inning was highlighted by a two-RBI double from the bat of Davidson and an RBI single from junior Ana Gold.
- Wright then put the game away striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory and series sweep.
NOTES
- The Blue Devils recorded their fourth ACC series sweep of the season and third consecutive.
- With the win, the Blue Devils now lead the all-time series with Clemson, 10-3, including six of the last seven matchups.
- Duke is now 9-2 against top-25 opponents this season, falling only to No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 16 Florida State.
- Davidson powered the Blue Devils' offense, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run.
- The Lakewood Ranch, Fla., native registered her 56th RBI of the season to tie Gold and Kristina Foreman for a single-season program record.
UP NEXT
The Blue Devils continue the road swing on Wednesday, traveling to Greensboro, N.C., to face UNC Greensboro in a non-conference doubleheader at UNCG Softball Stadium. The opening game is set for 4 p.m.
