RALEIGH – With a 12-over, 296, in the final round of the Stitch Intercollegiate, the Duke men's golf team finished in third place at 34-over, 886, overall. The Blue Devils had three total individuals finish in a tie for ninth or better, led by
Luke Sample, who took home a second-place finish at 3-over, 216, overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND THREE
- With wind once again a factor, including a two-hour delay to high winds, no team finished under-par in the final round. As a team, Duke shot a 12-over, 296, in the third round.
- Luke Sample carded his third consecutive round of 1-over, 72, on Saturday en route to a 3-over, 216, performance for the weekend. Sample played steady golf throughout his 18 holes on Saturday, with just two bogeys – both on the front-nine – and one birdie, coming on the par-5 15th.
- William Love wrapped up a top-10 finish overall with his 2-over, 73, during the final round. The sophomore finished the event at 7-over, 220, and in a tie for ninth place. Love played both the front and back-nine at 1-over, logging one birdie and two bogeys in each half of his round. His two birdies were carded on the par-5 seventh and the par-3 14th and he rolled in a total of 12 pars to finish off his round.
- Ethan Evans signed for a 3-over, 74, on Saturday and tied for 38th at 14-over, 230, through the three rounds. Evans dropped all three shots within his first six holes and parred the remainder of his 18 holes.
- Bryan Kim shot a 6-over, 77, and joined Evans in a tie for 38th overall for the tournament. Kim made the turn at 5-over and back-to-back bogeys pushed the freshman to 7-over after 13 holes, but a birdie on the downhill par-3 17th ended his round on a high note.
- Jimmy Zheng logged a 7-over, 78, and was the third Blue Devil to finish tied for 38th overall.
- Individually, Daniel Choi led the way for Duke with his second even-par round of the weekend en route to a tie for ninth place overall at 7-over. Choi started his round on No. 10 and quickly got into red numbers with a birdie on his opening hole. The sophomore made the turn to the front-nine at 1-over but rebounded with back-to-back birdies on holes No. 1 and 2. Two bogeys over his next three holes moved Choi back to 1-over, but one final birdie, this time on the par-3 sixth, brought him back to even-par.
- Ian Siebers added a 4-over, 75, on Saturday and tied for 15th overall at 8-over. John Peters went 5-over in the third round and tied for 53rd with a 21-over. Kelly Chinn ended his tournament with a 6-over, 77, and in a tie for 23rd at 11-over and Daniel Uranga rounded out Duke's representation in the field with a 15-over, 86, on Saturday and an 80th place finish at 39-over.
