DURHAM — The ACC unveiled the 2024 women's basketball All-ACC Academic Team selections Thursday afternoon with six Blue Devils – senior
Kennedy Brown, graduate student
Camilla Emsbo, sophomores
Emma Koabel and
Taina Mair, junior
Reigan Richardson and freshman
Delaney Thomas – earning the distinction.
The six honors push Duke's total to 75 selections all-time. It marks the second-career nod to the All-Academic team for Brown and Richardson while Emsbo, Koabel, Mair and Thomas pick up their first-career selections.
Tabbed to the All-ACC Second Team, Richardson started each game for the Blue Devils and paced the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game. Of her 19 double-figure scoring outings, Richardson erupted for 20-plus points on seven occasions, including back-to-back NCAA Tournament games of 25 points and 28 points, respectively, against Richmond and Ohio State to help lead Duke to its 18th Sweet 16 appearance while becoming the first Duke women's basketball player since Alana Beard to register back-to-back NCAA Tournament games of 25+ points in the process.
Brown, a preseason Lisa Leslie Award watch list candidate, started all 33 games this season for the Blue Devils averaging 8.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. She posted double figure scoring in 14 games and pulled down at least five rebounds in 23 contests including three with 10-plus caroms. The Derby, Kan., product set the Duke record for most blocks in a first quarter vs. Florida State (Jan. 25), tallying four of her game-high five rejections during the period. Additionally, Brown was one of the catalysts in helping the Blue Devils post the ACC's top defensive for the second consecutive season while checking in at No. 4 in the NCAA in that same metric, according to HerHoopStats.
Mair made an immediate impact in her first season as a Blue Devil, leading the team with 3.7 dimes per game while ranking second in scoring at just under 10 points (9.9). She started each of Duke's 33 games, reached double digits 14 times, including a season-high of 24 against Florida Gulf Coast (Dec. 10) and dished out five or more assists in eight games.
Emsbo appeared in 33 contests with two starts and averaged 15.1 minutes, 4.4 points, 2.9 boards and a team-best 1.4 blocks (46 total). The graduate student registered season highs in points (13) and rebounds (7) against NC Central (Nov. 26) and matched her season best of four blocks on three occasions, most recently against Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Thomas gained valuable experience as a freshman, playing in 32 of 33 games while producing splits of 5.1 points and 3.4 caroms in 16.8 minutes off the bench. The Charles Town, W. Va., product led the Blue Devils in both field goal (.554) and three-point percentage (.385), respectively. Of her five double-figure scoring games, four came against top-25 opponents while the other featured a career-high 19-point outburst to help lead Duke to a 68-60 overtime dub over North Carolina (Feb. 11). Thomas also notched the first double-double of her career with a 10 point, 13 rebound performance against NC Central (Nov. 26).
Koabel saw action in all 33 games during the season and made her first-career start against NC Central (Nov. 26) where she notched career-bests in points (13), minutes (28) and steals (3). The sophomore also tallied 12 points against Coastal Carolina (Nov. 9), knocking down four triples en route to helping Duke set the program single-game record for most threes in a game.
Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. In addition, student-athletes must compete in at least 50 percent of their team's games.
