BALTIMORE, Md.—Duke attackman
Josh Zawada recorded six assists and eight different Blue Devils scored at least one goal in a 16-10 victory over Loyola in men's lacrosse action at Ridley Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
Brennan O'Neill finished his day with four goals and an assist for five points while
Dyson Williams had four goals. Defensively, Duke (6-1) held Loyola (2-5) to a season-low 25 shots and forced the Greyhounds into 18 turnovers, the second most this season by Loyola and five more than its season average.
How it Happened
- Loyola opened the scoring at 1:13 on its opening possession before the Blue Devils put together a 3-0 run over the next nine minutes for a 3-1 lead at the 4:49 mark. Three different Blue Devils scored in the spurt.
- The Greyhounds and Blue Devils traded goals in the final five minutes with Duke holding a 6-4 lead after 15 minutes. All six of Duke's goals came off different sticks as O'Neill. Williams, Aidan Danenza, Andrew McAdorey, Charles Balsamo and Max Sloat got on the board.
- Duke extended its lead back to three, but a pair from Loyola's Matt Heuston and a third from Adam Poitras tied the game with under two minutes remaining in the half. The Blue Devils fired just eight shots in the second quarter and were held scoreless for 14:45.
- Williams took a feed from O'Neill on the opening possession of the third quarter to put the Blue Devils back in front and spur a 5-2 quarter to send Duke into the fourth period with a 12-9 lead. Jack Pappendick notched his first of the day while O'Neill had two in the stretch. The Blue Devils fired 17 shots in the third quarter, one more than they had in the entire first half.
- Duke short stick middie Jack Gray got on the board 12 seconds into the fourth quarter, extending the Blue Devils' lead to four. The Blue Devils tacked on three more goals to earn the 16-10 victory.
- Jake Naso won 17-of-25 faceoffs and picked up 12 ground balls while the trio of close defensemen Henry Bard, Kenny Brower and Keith Boyer each had two caused turnovers apiece.
- In goal, Patrick Jameison had six saves. Loyola goalie Luke Staudt had 13 stops.
Notes
- Brennan O'Neill's four goals extended his point streak to 35 games. He has 114 goals in that span. Dyson Williams pushed his goal streak to 29 straight games – netting 95 goals in that stretch.
- Williams' hat trick is the 36th of his career and the sixth this season while O'Neill notched his 33rd career hat trick. O'Neill has 177 career goals and Williams at 176, fifth and sixth, in Duke history, respectively. Williams moved to 17th on the Duke points list with 198.
- Jake Naso's 17 wins at the dot give him 893 career victories, ranking ninth in NCAA Division I history and seven away from 900. He picked up 12 ground balls to give him 502 for his career, the 11th player in Division I history to reach the mark. He needs seven more to climb into the top 10.
