DURHAM – Sophomore
Aminah Vega tallied the first multi-home run game of her career to lead No. 5 Duke to a series win over No. 15 Virginia Tech on Friday at Duke Softball Stadium.
The Blue Devils (28-3, 9-2 ACC) walked off the Hokies (25-7-1, 9-2 ACC), 6-5, with an RBI-single from senior
Kelly Torres in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the conference series.
Vega was perfect on the night, finishing 4-for-4 with a single, double and a pair of two-run home runs. The DeBary, Fla., native drove in four of Duke's six total runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hokies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after sending out a three-run home run and solo shot in the opening frame.
- Vega responded in the home half with her first two-run blast of the contest, cutting the Hokies' advantage to 4-2. The long ball also brought in senior Claire Davidson, who reached on a hit by pitch.
- The next three frames went scoreless before Vega closed the gap with another two-run shot over the center field wall to tie the game up at 4-4.
- Senior Sarah Goddard pushed the Blue Devils ahead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Torres from second with an RBI-single into center field.
- Virginia Tech was able to plate another run on two hits and an error to tie the game back up at 5-5, heading into the bottom of the seventh.
- The Blue Devils were not finished yet, loading the bases on one out using a pair of walks and a double. Torres then ripped a base hit to the center field wall to walk it off, 6-5.
NOTES
- Senior Lillie Walker earned the win in the circle after allowing just one run off three hits in her 3.0 innings of relief.
- The Inola, Okla., native improved her season ledger to 7-1 after 15 appearances on the year.
- Classmate Jala Wright made her 57th career start, tossing 4.0 innings and allowing three earned runs off six hits with five strikeouts.
- Vega tallied her 10th multi-RBI game of the season.
- The Blue Devils hold a 15-0 record when playing at Duke Softball Stadium this season.
- With the win, Duke has now won eight straight conference series, including four on the year.
