DURHAM – Fifth-ranked Duke (27-3, 8-2 ACC) scored runs in every inning to roll past No. 15 Virginia Tech (25-6-1, 9-1 ACC), 14-5, after five innings on Thursday night at Duke Softball Stadium.
The Blue Devils handed the Hokies their first conference loss of the season and recorded the first run-rule victory in the teams' all-time series.
Senior
Lillie Walker picked up the win in the circle after tossing 2.1 innings in relief, surrendering just one run off one hit. The Inola, Okla., native improved her season ledger to 6-1 after 14 appearances on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Devils' bats were hot from the start, registering eight runs in the opening two frames to create an 8-0 gap between the teams. The eight runs came off six hits, including two doubles by sophomore Aminah Vega and one triple from junior Ana Gold.
- The Hokies used an RBI-double and a three-run home run in the top of the third to cut the Blue Devils' advantage in half at 8-4.
- Senior Claire Davidson responded in the bottom of the frame though with a two-run blast over the left field wall to increase the Blue Devils' edge to 10-4. Davidson's long ball also scored sophomore D'Auna Jennings, who led off the frame with a single.
- Duke continued its offensive presence in the fourth, adding another four runs using a pair of RBI-singles from redshirt-sophomore Jada Baker and graduate student Gisele Tapia as well as a sacrifice fly from Davidson.
- Virginia Tech's Cori McMillan tallied her second home run of the night in the top of the fifth before Walker retired the final two batters to seal the five-inning win.
NOTES
- Sophomore Cassidy Curd earned her 31st career start in the circle, working 2.2 inning and allowing four runs off six hits with five strikeouts.
- Baker, Davidson and Vega combined to drive in nine of Duke's 14 runs after each tallied three RBI on the night.
- Gold leads the team in triples after recording her second of the season during the contest.
