DURHAM – Sixth-ranked Duke softball (20-1, 3-0 ACC) extended its winning streak to 20 games after besting Liberty (11-12, 2-1 ASUN), 4-1, at Liberty Softball Stadium Tuesday night.
The Blue Devils' four runs on the night came from solo home runs off the bats of seniors
Sarah Goddard and
Kelly Torres, redshirt-sophomore
Jada Baker and sophomore
Aminah Vega.
Sophomore
Cassidy Curd and senior
Lillie Walker shared the circle, tossing 3.2 and 3.1 innings, respectively. Walker picked up the win after surrendering just one hit and collecting three strikeouts in her three innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Liberty opened the scoring with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 advantage.
- The next three frames went scoreless before Walker took over for Curd in the bottom of the fourth inning. Walker worked her way out of bases loaded jam to keep it a 1-0 game.
- Goddard went yard in the top of the fifth inning to even the score, 1-1.
- Back-to-back solo blasts from Vega and Torres pushed the Blue Devils ahead, 3-1, in the sixth.
- Baker extended the lead again with a shot over the left field wall to round out the scoring.
- Walker settled back in for the sixth and seventh inning, sitting down the final six batters to preserve the win, 4-1.
NOTES
- Duke tallied its seventh multi-home run game of the season.
- The 20-game winning streak tied the program's longest streak since Feb. 21-Mar. 26, 2021
- Liberty's solo home run was the first run allowed by the Blue Devils since Feb. 25 against Villanova.
- Walker now holds a 0.33 ERA and improved to 4-0 on the season.
- Vega, Torres and Gold extended their hitting streaks to five-, four- and three-straight contests, respectively.
