LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Duke women's lacrosse team collected a 16-13 road victory over Liberty Tuesday evening in Lynchburg, Va.
Duke was led by Katie DeSimone and Caroline DeBellis with five goals each while Maddie McCorkle brought in a career-high five points from three goals and two assists. Defensively, the Blue Devils were led by Reilly Traynor with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Goalie Kennedy Everson tallied six saves for a .429 save percentage in 48 minutes of action.
How It Happened
- Duke got on the board quickly, nine seconds into the game to be exact, and took an early 3-0 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the quarter. Liberty responded with three of its own (3-3) before the two squads traded goals to end the period.
- The Blue Devils trailed 6-5 after the first quarter despite winning 10 of the 11 draw controls.
- Duke added five goals over the next 15 minutes to take a 10-7 lead at half.
- The Blue Devils outshot the Flames, 7-5, in the third quarter and connected on four of them as DeSimone found the back of the cage twice.
- Liberty's offense was firing in the fourth quarter with 13 shots to just three for Duke.
- The two teams traded goals the first seven minutes (16-9) before Liberty tacked on four unanswered. The late rally came up short as the Blue Devils captured its third win of the season.
- Duke won the draw control battle as Kerry Nease led the team with nine. As a team, the Blue Devils were almost perfect on clears, 19-of-21. Duke also committed 25 fouls to just nine for Liberty.
Notables
- It was head coach Kerstin Kimel's 343rd career victory and her 339th at Duke.
- Duke moves to 3-3 this spring and is 3-2 against non-conference opponents.
- The all-time series moves to 4-0 in favor of Duke.
- DeSimone has been Duke's leading scorer in all of its six games this spring. She now owns 224 career points to rank seventh in program history.
- DeSimone tallied her 28th-career hat trick and her 30th game with four-or-more points.
- DeSimone has combined for 17 points the last three games.
- Olivia Carner and Eva Pronti led the team with three assists each, career highs for both.
- Liberty was led by Mackenzie Lehman with four goals.
