DURHAM – Seventeen different Blue Devils had a hand in the victory as the 25th-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team cruised past Winthrop, 25-5, Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
Duke's offense exploded as 12 different Blue Devils found the back of the cage, led by Katie DeSimone with six goals and an assist for a game-high seven points while freshman Caitlin Barrett collected a career-high four goals.
Eight of Duke's 25 goals were from free-position opportunities as Lexi Schmalz was 3-of-3. Defensively, Courtney Kaufman got the start in the cage for the fourth consecutive game. The Blue Devils also utilized Kennedy Everson and Delaney Ott between the pipes. DeSimone led the ground ball game with three while Adele Swanson collected three caused turnovers.
How It Happened
- Duke opened the scoring fast and furiously in the first half, leading 17-4 after 30 minutes of action.
- DeSimone and Katie Keller accounted for seven of Duke's first eight goals. As a team, the Blue Devils converted on seven free-position attempts.
- With a 13-goal lead after halftime, the Blue Devils cleared its bench, providing valuable playing time to its non-starters. Duke tacked on eight more goals after intermission with six of those goals coming from the sticks of freshmen or redshirt freshmen.

- It was head coach Kerstin Kimel's 342nd career victory and her 338th at Duke.
- Duke moves to 2-2 this spring ahead of its ACC opener.
- The all-time series moves to 1-0 in favor of the Blue Devils.
- Duke outshot Winthrop, 38-10, and put 31 on cage as it opened the contest with 16 shots in the first quarter.

- DeSimone tallied her 26th career hat trick and her 28th game with four-plus points.
- Six different Blue Devils saw their first career goals — Barrett, Ava Biancardi, Tess Gagliano, Ellie Lazzaretto, Kaylie Mackiewicz and Reese Woodworth.
- Duke's FOGO Ellie White grabbed a career-high nine draw controls as Duke won the battle, 22-7.
- The Blue Devils were nearly perfect on clears (8-of-9) and won the ground ball battle, 13-5.
- Duke nearly cleared its bench as 31 student-athletes saw game action.
- Winthrop was led by Claire Witmer with two goals.
