DURHAM – Former Blue Devil attackman
Michael Sowers will play for another Premier Lacrosse League title Monday morning after helping lead the Philadelphia Waterdogs to the title game of the 2024 Championship Series with an unblemished 4-0 record.
The championship game is set to begin Monday, Feb. 19 at 11:30 a.m., at The St. James in Springfield, Va. It will be televised on ESPN2. Sowers and the Waterdogs went undefeated through pool play and upended the Utah Archers 27-21 to advance to the final game. They take on the Boston Cannons, which downed California Redwoods, 23-15, behind 11 points from Asher Nolting.
In the must-win game versus Utah, Sowers had three one-point scores, a pair of two-pointers and an assist for eight points.
After four games, Sowers has 11 goals, including a pair of two-point tallies and 11 assists to rank third overall in the series in points. His 11 dimes are tied for the most while his nine goals are tied for fifth. In the first meeting with the Cannons, Sowers had one assist.
Former All-American midfielder
Nakeie Montgomery also took part in the Championship Series, playing for California Redwoods. In four games, Montgomery had seven goals and two assists for nine points. He also had two caused turnovers and five ground balls.
The PLL Championship Series featured the top four teams from the 2023 PLL season competing in Olympic Sixes – the game format set to bring lacrosse back to the Olympics for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games.
In "Sixes," all runners carry short-sticks and move as midfielders, navigating the full length of the 70-by-36-meter field. There is no shot backup, a 30-second shot clock and quick restarts after goals where the goaltender initiates play instead of the traditional faceoff in field lacrosse.
