One of 15 collegiate athletes that include Iowa's Caitlin Clark, Oregon quarterback Bo Nix and Texas volleyball star Madisen Skinner, O'Neill is one of two lacrosse players on the list. Northwestern's Izzy Scane is also a semifinalist.
Already cemented as one of the best attackmen to don a Blue Devil uniform, O'Neill returns for his final season of leading the Blue Devil offense. In 2023, O'Neill captured nearly every award possible, winning the Tewaaraton Award, the Raymond J. Enners National Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year, consensus first-team All-America honors all while leading the Blue Devils to the NCAA title game.
O'Neill followed his outstanding season as a Blue Devil with an incredible performance on the international stage with the USA Lacrosse Men's National Team. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native helped lead the U.S., to the World Lacrosse Championship gold medal, scoring five goals in the gold medal game. He was named the World Lacrosse Championship Most Valuable Player for his tournament performance.
A dual threat as an elite scorer and passer, O'Neill has picked up right where he left off last season with 15 total points in the first two games. He currently ranks sixth at Duke in career goals (159) and points (241). With 82 assists to his name, O'Neill is on pace to join Justin Guterding as just the second Blue Devil in history to amass 200 goals and 100 assists in his career.
The winner of the award will be determined through a second voting period with the finalists in mid-March.
The AAU James E. Sullivan Award, presented by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), is awarded annually to "the most outstanding athlete at the collegiate or Olympic level in the United States". The award was established in 1930 in honor of the organization's founder and past president, James Edward Sullivan. Based on the qualities of leadership, character, and sportsmanship, the AAU Sullivan Award "goes far beyond athletic accomplishments and honors those who have shown strong moral character".
