PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – No. 11 Duke softball (3-1) defeated Long Beach State (0-3), 2-0, in its final game of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Saturday night.
Five Blue Devils went 1-for-3 at the plate in seniors
Claire Davidson and
Kelly Torres, junior
Kelsey Zampa, sophomore
D'Auna Jennings and freshman
Amiah Burgess. Jennings also accounted for both of Duke's runs during the contest.
Davidson and Wright were recognized for their overall performances on the weekend through being named to the All-Tournament team. Davidson led the way at the plate, finishing 5-for-12 with two doubles, a grand slam and seven RBI. Wright was stellar in the circle, posting a 0.66 ERA after three appearances while fanning 13 in her 10.2 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Devils were quick to jump ahead in the first inning after an RBI-single from Davidson scored Jennings, who reached on an error.
- Graduate transfer Dani Drogemuller and sophomore Cassidy Curd combined in the circle to shutdown the Beach offense, surrendering just one hit over the next three frames.
- Jennings tallied her second run of the night in the fifth inning after sending a single up the middle and advancing to third on an error from Long Beach State's first baseman in the following at bat.
- Junior Ana Gold laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring Jennings home for Duke's second and final run.
- Wright came in for relief in the bottom of the fifth and tossed 2.2 hitless innings while striking out four to complete the shutout win.
NOTES
- Wright picked up the win and improves to 2-0 in the circle.
- Drogemuller earned her second start as a Blue Devil in as many appearances.
- Davidson and Torres each collected stolen bases during the contest.
